On this day in 1871, Orville Wright is born in Ohio; 1911, a nearly five-hour flight sets a new flight endurance record; 1919, a new speed record of 163mph; in 1929, the Navy's only successful metal airship makes its first flight; and in 1969, Brazilian aeronautics giant Embraer is founded. In 1980, Saudia Flight 163 burns in Riyadh.
