A Brazilian business magazine reported Friday afternoon that Sao Paulo-based TAM Airlines has reached a merger agreement with LAN Airlines of Chile.

The big question is will the combined airline become a member of oneworld (of which LAN is a current member) or Star Alliance (of which TAM is a current member) ?

They will continue to operate as separate brands, so the alliances will probably stay the same.
