Heavy rain forces closing of Milwaukee airport

(CNN) -- The main airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is closed because of heavy rain and flooding until at least noon Friday, the airport said.

A spokesman for General Mitchell International Airport said flooding on the roads surrounding the airport and airfield have closed the facility.

The water is about 2 feet deep in the medians surrounding the runways and is spilling out and standing on the runways, spokesman Ryan McAdams said.

Once the water recedes, the runways will need to be cleaned. Between 100 and 200 people stayed in the airport overnight.

AirTran Airways has cancelled all flights to and from the airport through 12 p.m. CDT. Passengers traveling through the airport on Friday may change their reservations without penalty for travel within five days of their original scheduled departure.

Officials in the city were answering calls about water seeping into basements, and the rain also has led to a sinkhole at a downtown intersection.

One of the two runways has reopened.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.

Weird, I know you didn't do this on purpose, but a Cessna 206 crashed into Lake Michigan a couple hours before you posted: http://nycaviation.com/2010/07/23/plane ... -michigan/
