Qantas changes JFK to an A330 for 2010

From early next year QF25 will be an A330-203 SYD-AKL-LAX-JFK, returning as the QF26.

As a result LAX-JFK-LAX will be an A330.

This is public knowledge from Qantas that I obtained from their Chief 767 Training Capt.

Not terribly surprising. It's no secret that Qantas doesn't have great loads between LAX and JFK and primarily have been keeping the 747 on the route for their decent cargo revenue. Now that they have the A330, which has a smaller passenger cabin, but still has a decent amount of room for cargo this is the better option. Although having the flight stop in AKL before continuing onto SYD is a bad move, this does give Delta an upper hand in this market as they go JFK-LAX-SYD. However I'm sure Qantas will offer an American code-share to a direct SYD flight like the currently do.

Shame we won't be seeing Wunala at all anymore. :(

And apparently will be seeing the A380 never. :(
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Really not a surprise. I think once the hoopla wore off and these carriers looked at the numbers the whalejet just doesn't work on these routes. Emirates learned it and the rest will too.

I don't think we were ever going to see the A380 from Qantas, there is just no need for it on the route. I think we'll end up seeing the A330 and perhaps the 747 again until the 787 is delivered, whenever that may be.

I am confused. The current Qantas flight from LAX is QFA 107, a B744. Do you mean that flight will be replaced in 2010 with flight QFA 25 from LAX? Or will there be 2 separate flights? I was expecting Qantas to discontinue their B744 into JFK for a while now. Even Korea just stopped flying their B744 into JFK for their popular morning/afternoon flights. The late night flights which spotters can't see will still be a B744. Soon, only B74F cargo flights will be seen at JFK.

A little bit of an update on this...

Per the Airliners thread regarding the Qantas summer changes, apparently Qantas is indeed planning on downgrading JFK to the A330-200 but for only 4 of the 7 weekly flights, which would leave the 747-400 still operating to JFK 3xweekly. Nothing official has been changed or announced yet.

I was looking at the Qantas Schedule well into August and it still showed the 747 to JFK.
