TV on LI - USA Network "Royal Pains"

Don't know if anyone is watching Royal Pains, the USA Network show that debuted last week. If you're not familiar, it's about a young, hotshot doctor at a high-end NYC hospital, who gets fired after a wealthy donor dies while the doc was treating a homeless man. He ends up as a "concierge doctor" in the Hamptons, making housecalls for the rich and famous who don't want to deal with the medical system.

They have been filming in and around the area for the past couple of months, out in the Hamptons and East End of course, but also at Oheka Castle in Huntington, Caumsett State Park, Planting Fields Arboretum, and Gateway National Recreation Area.

In last night's show, they used a location right in my backyard. The Syosset Dairy Barn Store stood in for a little hot dog stand the characters visit. It is literally two blocks from my house, and I've been using it for years!

I don't know how I missed them shooting, although thinking about it, I do remember the road past the side of the store they shot from was closed one afternoon about a month ago - PD blocking the street, but nothing obvious (crash/fire) that I could see from a couple of blocks away, so it may have been for the shoot.

Neat. Is the show any good?

It's not bad, one of your typical summer cable shows. It doesn't take itself too seriously, has some gorgeous scenery, and it fits in well after watching Burn Notice (which I love). Compared to the wasteland of repeats and reality shows, it's certainly worth trying.

Anybody who was at Republic to see the Thunderbird Arivals saw them filming a few weeks back. When I asked the guys what show it was for, they said, "Royal Pains" and I said, "I agree" as I had to move my truck out of the lot.

I didn't see any of the stars but saw a bunch of the extra's/backgrounders coming and going.

Those scenes appeared at the beginning of tonight's show - the doctor and company joined a family heading off to their private island retreat. They boarded a Talon helicopter, with a couple of Talon's jets in the background.

Did you notice the first scene when they were driving on New Highway, the airport was on the left, then on the right, then on the left. So much for one take shoots!

The show Royal Pains is not half-bad, in fact, I find myself enjoying the show.....

They are filming at the Oyster Bay Marina today - I took a ride up (it's only about 5 minutes from me). They set up "Base Camp" in the west end parking lot at Teddy Roosevelt Beach...

They were filming on the sailing ship Quasart which has facilities for film production.

Actors Reshma Shetty (L) and Paulo Costanzo during one take. In the show, he plays the brother of the doctor, and she is his physician's assistant.

During the scene, Costanzo throws a beer can over the side...

...which was promptly retrieved by the harbor patrol, waiting out of sight.

I was on the end of a fishing pier about 50 yards from the ship. During several breaks in shooting, I caught Shetty looking in my direction. I guess that big white Canon lens isn't very covert!
