    I Found the Concorde !

I spent all day Friday trying to find the towed Concorde. It was supposed to be docked in Jersey City but no Concorde there. I got an idea to ride on the Staten Island Ferry. Sure enough, I spotted her, miles away, in the same Bayonne dock where the Intrepid stayed 2 years ago for repairs. I saw her again yesterday. Today, she will be towed back to the Intrepid in Manhattan. No times were given. Incidentally, this isn't the first Concorde visit to New Jersey. While still in service, when JFK was enshrouded in fog, I recall Concordes were diverted temporarily to EWR. This was rare though.

She is now on dry ground in Manhattan according to the Associated Press. I will try to grab some pics tonight or tomorrow morning.

Wow, she looks brand new! And a much nicer home than the barge she lived on before. Good work, Moose.

Great shots Moose and I agree with Gotham, she looks BRAND NEW ! Two comments, was she always displayed with her flaps lowered? Also does anyone share my concern that the way she is postioned there is absolutley no protection at all from the elements, high winds, high wind caused blowing debris, etc. Just curios.

The only thing I really could ask for is a plastic bubble dome over it.
And I, I took the path less traveled by
and that has made all the difference......yet...
I have a feeling a handle of people are going to be very interested in what I post in the near future.

Re: I Found the Concorde !

Yesterday, I watched the slow and tedious process of lowering her to her place on the pier from 12th Ave. behind the fence. They kept the public at a distance. Only the press, wearing hardhats, were allowed on the pier. It was interesting but took a great deal of time. So much for the tale they told that her nose would be repaired AFTER her return to the Intrepid. She looked good but I saw her from a distance. The other side, which had some rust marks, was not visible, as the pier is covered by flagpoles on the north side. It was nice seeing her hoisted about 100 feet above the ground. Does this count as her final flight?

Re: I Found the Concorde !

I ran-over to the Intrepid Pier on Monday morning to see the arrival after reading on the Intrepid website that the voyage would begin at 5 AM from Bayonne, but I arrived too late (9:30). I was able to see them put the orange harness over her front fuselage and slowly lift-her up 50 feet. It took well-over 90 minutes. What I can't figure-out is why they placed 3 orange cones on 1 wing while she was being lowered and positioned. Sadly, the public was not allowed on the Pier as it's still a construction site. Even the press had to wear hardhats. We had to view the procedure from behind the fence on 12th Ave.

Does any one know if the exhaust holes and intake holes have been blocked up inside with plywood as you can't see this from these photos.

Re: I Found the Concorde !

Yes, the holes where the engines used to be are still covered with plywood from as close-up as I could see. I think the plywood was put-up at Floyd Bennett. I'd like to know if the engine was also returned along with the Concorde as the engine is sort of the heart of supersonic flight. It was in plain sight at Floyd Bennett. Hopefully, it was returned to the Intrepid on Monday. Aboard the Intrepid was also a second engine on the Hangar Deck, it was never labelled but I recognized it.
