STS-123 Endeavour Night Launch

Well I just returned from Florida about two hours ago.

This morning around 2:28AM Endeavour lifted off of Pad 39A. was not able to witness the entire accent due do to cloud cover. Just amazing to see in person.

Here are a couple of shots from the NASA Causeway about six miles from the Launch Site.

That's incredible Eric. I'd love to get down there to witness a shuttle launch one day.

Outstanding, Eric! I was down for a shuttle launch 20+ years ago, but didn't as close, or have the kind of equipment I have today. Would love to get close for another launch.

Great shots Eric, with so many launch delays in recent missions glad this one went as scheduled. Seeing/hearing a launch in person is an amazing experiance, at night must have made it even more special.

For about the last month since I knew I was going to a night launch I have been researching on how to shoot the shuttle. From what I gathered the best setting is to shoot it as though it was Daylight. I shoot Manual 125 F8.0. I had two camera's, two tripods. What I was looking to do was get a number of shoots off with one camera and on the other would be a wide angle Long exposure(was not able to get this shoot as the shuttle went into the clouds) From what I have been told is to wait till T-3 and then begin shooting.

How loud was it from where you were?

Since I was six miles away and Light Travel's faster then sound I didn't get to hear the shuttle until it went into the clouds. It was loud.


This was my second attempt at a launch in the past year. First time around it got postponed and I couldn't make it. Remember if you are going to buy a launch ticket there are no refunds so plan accordingly. Tickets usually sell out within minutes. Included with my ticket was Dinner in this case breakfast with a former Astronaut.
