Gordon, thanks a lot for posting that amazing video, as I missed the a.net thread. A lot of times the term nearly crashed is a huge egageration with things like this but that came pretty close.

If anyone made it this far with out actually watching the video, you really need to watch it, absolutley INCREDIBLE !

    Cheers

Holy crow! I wonder if the pilot will get in trouble for not deciding to go around sooner.

Here's the pic of it (not mine)

My God that's crazy. I've never seen any like that before. The wingtip actually hit?! Wow. Lucky they walked away.

Anyone know if they diverted after that or tried again?

They wound up circling around and landing on a different runway. Apparently Hurricane Emma had been going through Germany at the time, causing the high winds. Here's some more pictures.

And here's some more damage on JP

That is one nasty rub. On xmas 2005 in Sarasota an AirTran 717 dug one in on landing in a pretty bad storm. Tore the landing light off the wingtip and forced replacement of the tim in Sarasota.

WOW!! Lucky to be alive. That was some serious wingtip and then the slide to the left off the runway. Crazy!

i wouldn't go that far. the situation was bad from the start because of the low-level wind shear/crosswind. the approach was ok until the pilot flared, the wind gusted and caught the airplane under the right wing and that's what caused the left tip to scrape. right the decision on his part to hit the TOGA! good pilotage IMO.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

I guess they're not used to hurricane conditions in Germany. Someone get Al Gore on the phone!
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

I'll bet there were many a soiled underpants on the flight. Turbulences and rocking about is once thing that gets passengers nervous. But the sound of grinding metal......I would probably would have lost it a bit.

In fact, I think most of us here, having been on a flight or two, might have really thought "this might be it."

Very scary situation just seeing that the wing had touched the ground breaking the bottom winglet but at least no one was hurt...
