What's Up with the NYC Taxis

Recently heads have been turning (more so than usual) at cabs, as there have been some changes recently. First a new logo was unveiled: http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/safety ... main.shtml

Second, through the end of the year taxis will feature flower decals painted by children: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/ ... ex.html?hp

I'm surprised the taxi commission approved the new logo, given that it's very modern-looking at not government-looking. I've seen a number of the flower taxis and they're certainly eye-catching.

i saw the flower paintings on cabs on my way in to work today. didn't know what it's about 'till now though. IMO, it's a decent change.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

The flower designs have been around for a little while now, and I just saw a taxi with the new logo Thursday night.... I kind of like the old style logos, but I guess the new ones look much more modern...

The chunky black font on the NYC in the new NYC Taxi logo is the same as in the new logo of NYC & Company, the official 'tourism marketing organization' i.e. tourist board. You can see it at http://www.nycvisit.com and I believe this is part of a wider effort, led by an ad executive appointed by the Mayor, to create a NYC branding that can be used on various city services and perhaps most importantly, sold to tourists on logo merchandise. The goal being of course to create marketable sources of incremental revenue from licensing etc.

I like the flowers, but the logo is kinda weak.

The new logo looks spray painted on.

I am glad you started this thread Winglets as I started seeing these flower designs on a large scale a few days ago and was wondering what was up ? In the photo the roofs are covered, the ones I have seen have only been the hoods and trunks, and since I am viewing them from busses I have a good view of the roofs.

    More cabs gone wild!

A taxi caught fire right outside one of the entrances to NBC Studios in Rockefeller Center today. Looking closely at the burning hood it looks like it was one of the flower cabs. :(
