Last night, I think on rwy 31L, a Delta 763 had some engine trouble at about 5pm or 6pm, and it, along with a large amount of emergency vehicles, stayed around the aircraft until after midnight.
It looked as though this contributed to the insane taxiway congestion last night, and perhaps even to the very rare 31R departures! I've seen Dash-8s and JetBlues take off on 31R, but never heavies!

From what I understand the 767 blew several tires making it's removal from the runway time consuming. Also it's location also forced ( I believe) the closure of 4L-22R hence the 31R departures.

I know last night a Delta flight blew some tires on the takeoff roll. I don't remember what rwy it was on though.
Quite a rare sight indeed. When I worked for UAL back in the late 90's you would get 31R departures from A300's/ A310's/ and B762's & B763's. Keep in mind this was not a normal operation, but when things got really congested it did happen. A heavy departing 31R would be quiet a site. I'd imagine you could get quiet a cool picture from around Cargo Plaza and I'd also imagine they'd have to make a pretty sharp bank to avoid South Ozone Park which would also be quiet a site and would make for a good shot!
The best shots to be had for 31R departures are by the medical building near the JetBlue hangar. They are airborne and bank left right there, giving you a gorgeous side-on that would make you forget all about HoBe.
