Ryanair wants to fly trans-Atlantic

Executives at Europe's biggest low-cost carrier Ryanair are working on launching a transatlantic airline with a fleet of 30 to 50 long-haul aircraft in the next three to four years.

The new carrier would amass a fleet of up to 50 Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 mid-sized aircraft and serve destinations such as New York, Florida, Dallas and San Francisco from major Ryanair bases such as London Stansted, Dublin, Frankfurt Hahn in Germany and Barcelona in Spain.

Exactly right Mike. RyanAir is a huge 737 customer for Boeing. You don't tell one of your best customers "pick a number." RyanAir already has the inter Euro route network to make this idea a huge success. The issue is if they mock their long range service with their current service its going to be a painful ride across the pond.

I suppose they would. Anyway, in another article about Ryanair's international ambitions, which also talks about Zoom's new London-New York service for £129 ($255) each way, Michael O'Leary of Ryanair promises their fares across the pond will start at around £6 ($12)!!!

Tommy is right about how their in-flight service simply won't work on trans-atlantic flights.

They can get by with one meal, keeping it small, and by giving peopel good leg room. Leg room goes a LONG way with people, and it will help keep them happy on long flights. Legroom is right up there with DirecTV.

For those type of fares expect ad space on the outside of the airplane, as well as on the Flight Attendants!

I can see Ryan Air Aircraft sporting a Hertz logo on the side of the airplane, and the back of the Flight Attendant uniforms showing off a Maxwell House Coffe logo.

And you think that Ryanair would order as many 787's or an outstanding number as they did with 737's? It's a completely different market that doesn't require 100+ airframes. Also it's important to say that Ryanair has numerous bases throughout Europe and some of them are incapable of handling a market like this yet. A huge revolution in trans-Atlantic routes needs to take place in order to have a sure feeling of developing a very risky business. Once again flying in Europe is different then sending 200+ pax jets across the Atlantic. BTW, business and first classes make the most money on long haul flights, and profitability of a respective flight depends on this.

I'm sure the customer base is there, people will accept abysmal service if they think they got a deal, but what I wonder about is how do they make money at $12 on shorthaul, nevermind longhaul? MO'L is a PR machine, once suggesting they could fly people around for free if they got enough advertising revenue, but there are obvious limitations to this concept.
