JFK Tower Being Evacuated due to Fire ?

Hearing JFK Tower Being Evacuated due to a fire, looks like JFK may be a mess for a while and lots of possible diversions. Anyone else here anything ?

Check out Flightaware, all the inbounds are circling over NJ and to the south. Very interesting. Ron how long would it take to get an emergency tower up and running?

If you listen to JFK tower they are still operating takeoff's as well as landings. So if there is or was a fire they setup a secondary position really fast...

It appears it was an alarm and not an actual fire, they evacuated but FAA tower staff have returned, not really sure how big a back up this may or may not have caused.

Looks like the arrivals that were circling are now starting to land according to Flightaware. It looks like however UAL7274 is going back to IAD, she operates as Mesa 7274

    Tower Evac

The news said the tower was evacuated for about 20 minutes due to a smoke condition caused by faulty equipment. The total time off line was about 20 minutes.

All should be back to normal now.
    It's the fares, stupid

I got a call from US-West (HP) dispatch re the JFK tower event, they wanted to know if we could handle Flt 12 PHX-JFK if the delays where extensive. I said is it a 319 or 320, he said neither it's a 757 ! I thought to myself, a Cactus 757 in LGA, how awesome would that be. I told him no problem, we gotcha your back, send her our way, but it was not be,
I was pretty excited though for about 15 minutes.

I almost fell out of my chair when I started reading your post, Ron. If a HP 757 had landed at LGA when I wasn't there to see it, I would have not been happy. So I'm glad it continued to JFK. :)

Incidentally, my parents flew on Cactus 12 a few weeks ago and it was an A320. A 757 would have been better.

This post should serve as a reminder to everyone that this coming Saturday, we will in fact most likely see an HP plane at LGA. The CRJ900 coming from CLT will most likely be HP Express; I am not aware of any CRJ900s painted in US Express colors (old or new).

Yes, it's been a few years since I saw an America West aircraft at LGA. I'm very excited to see it coming back.
