The first 400 N406US was in LGA Monday 2-27 but no good shots where possible due the poor light but most of you will be happy, she was real pretty !

As part of the merging of N Numbers between HP and US someone decided all ETOPS aircraft would be 200 series hence the 330's 767's, and the 7 soon to be ETOPS rated 757's got those numbers. One thing I do like though is every ship number (3 digit) at Mainline is the same as the N number of reg. As both an employee and airline enthusiast this makes things much simpler. I could never understand an airline with as few planes as AirTran has ship numbers that do not match the registration. And don't even get me started on AA's ship number system. UA and NW both have 4 digit ship numbers, with well under a 1000 aircraft in their fleets not sure why it is necessary but I am sure it is for a revelent reason.

    Cheers

Thanks for clearing that up, I thought there might be some symbolism in going from the UW to the AY but I guess it's just because the re-numbering to reflect the ETOPS fleet created duplicates if the letters weren't changed...For example, N677UW became N277AY because 277UW was already taken by another ship, and so they had to find some other letters to put after the number.

So much is going on at US that I might have missed it, but do they have more A330s coming or is the widebody fleet sort of frozen until the A350 comes in a few years?

There is an order for 8 or 9 A330-200's with delivery's starting in 2008 and strong rumors of a used A340 acquisition from AC including the 2 500's in support of the China application.

    Regards

As best I can tell, NW and UA use the 4th digit to differentiate different configurations.

I am hearing more and more about the A-340 order as well as a possible opening of Africa but again this is what I have heard from a Captain I spoke with today.

    Fleet codes and reregistrations

    HI!
I think nwafan is talking about his fav airline, while AUH is talking about US Airways, and thus getting the thread crossed!

USAirways - The 767s have numbers in the range 640 - 655 (approx as I am not near my database or books) whilst the A330s were numbered 670 - 679. I even fleeted USAirways mainline a year ago by scoring a ride on N672UW from London to Philadelphia!! ;-)

These number ranges clash with America West's A320 fleet. The powers that be must have deemed it more economical to change the 767 and 330 regs than all the America West 320s. (I wonder how much the government charges everytime you change your registration. Just to do my car its $60!)

As for Northwest - Many of the Pinnacle CRJs were delivered direct from Canada in the new scheme, rather than have to go for a repaint. Plus CRJs are smaller - so you can paint four or five RJs in the time it takes to repaint a 747 ;-)

Northwest uses a four digit fleet code. For may types, the buses, 757s, Dc10s bless em and 74s, the reg of the aircraft can be worked out looking at the code! The DC9s fleet codes seem to defy any rules of math on this planet -(although I have a sneaking suspiction the first 9 stands for DC9 !) I have to look em up to work out the reg! - so NW saved themselves money and paint and retained its DC9s with Hughes Airwest, Eastern etc registrations..

Will stop here before I start to confuse myself!
