Fleet codes and reregistrations
HI!
I think nwafan is talking about his fav airline, while AUH is talking about US Airways, and thus getting the thread crossed!
USAirways - The 767s have numbers in the range 640 - 655 (approx as I am not near my database or books) whilst the A330s were numbered 670 - 679. I even fleeted USAirways mainline a year ago by scoring a ride on N672UW from London to Philadelphia!! ;-)
These number ranges clash with America West's A320 fleet. The powers that be must have deemed it more economical to change the 767 and 330 regs than all the America West 320s. (I wonder how much the government charges everytime you change your registration. Just to do my car its $60!)
As for Northwest - Many of the Pinnacle CRJs were delivered direct from Canada in the new scheme, rather than have to go for a repaint. Plus CRJs are smaller - so you can paint four or five RJs in the time it takes to repaint a 747 ;-)
Northwest uses a four digit fleet code. For may types, the buses, 757s, Dc10s bless em and 74s, the reg of the aircraft can be worked out looking at the code! The DC9s fleet codes seem to defy any rules of math on this planet -(although I have a sneaking suspiction the first 9 stands for DC9 !) I have to look em up to work out the reg! - so NW saved themselves money and paint and retained its DC9s with Hughes Airwest, Eastern etc registrations..
Will stop here before I start to confuse myself!

Actually, no I was talking about US Airways, the CRJ's are almost always in the new colors. But I received an explanation
