I wonder if this was only the players/coaches/game day staff? A 764 should be plenty big for that, they may have another charter heading out later in the week with family/friends/other staff that are just going to attend the game, and aren't needed for practice and game prep.

There might also be a cargo flight going as well - that could carry the equipment - although - if the passengers are traveling light - the cargo space might be enough...
