So I got the latest Southwest Airlines junkmail, laden with a bunch of fat bellied workers, scribbled with "Bags fly free" on their stomachs.

The latter, I gotta tell you, along with Pan Am's new show, I have to admit, got me in the mood to book a flight.

The current marketplace will find the fat guys in the Southwest ads are more effective.
As a plane geek the British Airways commercial is gorgeous, but the bottom line is their target audience is attracted to price and service, not romanticism.
BA doesn't offer anything special in terms of price or service, and the fact that they had the Concorde doesn't help folks these days.
Southwest service is of course barebones and fares are not that great anymore, but at least you don't have to pay to check a bag.

That BA commercial is stunning. And sadly, Matt is right, it won't appeal to the great unwashed masses the way fat guys with "Bags Fly Free" on the bellies will.

Problem is, of course,
price and service are inversely proportional.
I viewed the WN ad with bit of disgust and embarrassment, as it seems this is what we've come to.
The BA ad may get aviation nuts back up in the air, but beyond that??
As for target audience, its sad that American's don't know what they are missing. BA transcon coach and QF transAlt coach are both leaps ahead of AAs equivalent. And in my opinion, AA is hte best domestic in terms of overall service.

I put AA at the very bottom, mostly due to the attitude that I've seen from many of their crew, which I have learned is as per their reputation. As an enthusiast, AA is one of my favorites.
As for everything else, it's all economics. Most will watch that BA commercial and possibly be inspired to develop an increased respect for aviation and aviation history, but they won't step up and buy a ticket on BA as a result. They WILL choose on price.

So then, if its all price based, as I think it is as well, people ought to just STFU, deal with AAttitudes and just get on the plane. Pretty easy business ;)

I think people end up on AA for other reasons of influence, but we're taking it off topic I guess.
