Last night I was just about to go to bed when I saw a story on the news about a brush fire in Staten Island. My
ears perked up and as I turned to look at the screen they had some quick shots of a PD 412 loading up its bambi
bucket. What I saw looked like they painted the 412s the same color as the A119s. Instead of the usual light blue
it had the dark navy and white paint scheme. Unfortunately the TV didnt have DVR so I couldnt rewind and check it out.
So when did this happen? Interesting look though I always liked the NYPD Blue coloring. :)

i thought so too... last time i heard a 412 it was flying over LIC and i was looking into the sun but it looked like the colors that are on the A-119s are now a 412. i like the old colors more...

If you were in Manhattan today you would have seen Aviation 23 working the St. Pats Parade. # 23 is the
"unmarked' Command and Control Bell 412EP. They were up for hours slowly cruising the parade area.

i totally forgot about this, but it's not just the colors on 412 and 414 that are new... the helo's themselves are brand new ASR birds. wow, it's been a long time since i paid a visit to FBF. not my photo:

Nice work. Thought they just repainted the old birds. And the other ship will be N516PD according to the FAA DataBase.

Wait. So 412 is not a repaint? It's a new helicopter? What happened to the old one?

News Press Releases

Bell 412's to Fly for the NYPD

Press Contact
Jim McKenna
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (June 8, 2009) - Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today announced the sale of two 412EP helicopters to the New York Police Department (NYPD) for use as air sea rescue helicopters.

Bob Fitzpatrick, sr. vice president of Business Development and Commercial Programs stated, "Having a customer like the NYPD, which uses our products everyday, come back and buy updated models to replace their older fleet is a great testament to the quality of our products and the high level of customer support we provide our products in the field."

The NYPD Aviation Unit is slated to receive these new four-axis helicopters with state of the art avionics and mission specific equipment. Customization will be done by Edwards & Associates, Inc in Bristol, Tennessee.

Jeanette Eaton, Bell's regional sales manager for the Northeast said, "Working with a customer like the NYPD is a real pleasure. Their focus on being able to provide the highest capability to the people living in this region makes us as the manufacturer work doubly hard to meet their standards."

I was thinking that too as I looked at their site. The press release is exactly 1yr old ( June 8, 09 )
Is the Koala a twin engined heli?

single, which is probably why it replaced the single-engine 206.

Speaking of the 206s, I was watching an old Frank Sinatra movie "The Detective" the other evening with Frank as an
NYPD Sgt detective. There is a great scene of an NYPD Bell 206 with yellow fixed pontoons landing at the old Wall Street
Heliport on the East River and Frank getting out of the copter with a suspect. I have to believe this was a real PD ship
used in the movie and not a repainted ship. I mean why bother with the pontoons if you were repainting and i know back
in that time, 1968, PD/AU were flying ships with fixed pontoons including Bell 47s. And Frankie, being Mr. Sinatra, probably
got the full cooperation from the NYPD for realism.

I just saw the SCPD added another Astar B2 which will be its 3rd Astar to join the larger EC-145. The new
ship will replace the MD 900. I liked the MD 900. It had a cool look with the no-tail rotor and its fuselauge
design but the model, for SC, was just nothing but trouble. They had two. One became a hangar queen and
the other in and out of service. One of the big problems was a lack of support from McDonnell-Douglas as the company was in transition due to financial problems.

there is just something about NOTAR MD900s, CALSTAR bought a few and they were delivered from te factory with a fuel leak. it sat on the ramp for a while before it was finally sorted out. they're nice to fly though, lotta power in a little package. they feel a little top-ehavy though.

Bell simply makes a superior helo...

Sky Flightcare in Eastern Pa. been flying one for years now successfully.

And speaking of PD I was watching the Macys Fireworks tonite and it looked like PD was flying pretty close to the
barges. During the Finale a copter flew below 500 feet between the barges and the Jersey shore. Watching on my DVR
and be the copter "geek" that I am I played it back in slow-mo and as some explosions lit up the sky I got a good look
at the illuminated copter and pretty sure it was one of the Koalas.

A few weeks ago a 12 year old girl drowned here in Long Beach one block over from me...... NYPD and NCPD were flying staggered together searching for her while one of the A119's was up high and a Coast Guard Jayhawk from ACY breifly showed up...... I got picks on my crackberry but I was more worried about the girl than the choppers at that point to get my SLR out frankly.

Sadly a HH-60 went down today in the Northwest killing 3 after it reportedly hit power lines.

Yeah, that is some dangerous stuff... In Florida Bayflight has lost two birds to power lines in the last ten years..... One of which was carrying the fuel I delivered to it the night prior to the crash.
