i'm sitting in the office without much to do and got curious. if money weren't a factor and you were allowed to only buy two airplanes what would they be, and why? think seriously about this one. where would you base them? what would you use them for?

me, i'm sticking with Pilatus. i've flown the PC-12/45 and absolutely love the airplane. the airplane is big enough and has enough range to make trips to the west coast and europe in only a few legs, but also can make the short hops to ACK and BID comfortably too. best of all, they're single-pilot certified.

as far as an airplane for playing around goes, i'll take a PC-21 thank you very much. they're a glass-cockpit high performance military trainer that's nearly the same as a T-6.
if i were still living here on the east coast i'd want to base the airplanes at FRG or HTO. since i want to get my tail away from here and run as far west as possible i'd probably end up keeping them at SNS. they've got hangar and ramp space galore out there and the line guys are top-notch. then again, these airplanes aren't really tie-down compatable.
oh yeah, i'd paint them like this:

i've checked with the FSDO, and it's totally legal too.

Good thread.
The first one is easy. I'd get an L-1011 and paint it (or buff it) in Eastern colors, but would probably use the same Eastern font and put NYCAviation on it instead. I would also TRY to register it to N301TZ, the former ATA 738 reg.
It's my favorite aircraft type. It's rare, and it can carry a lot of people, allowing me to bring many people. Its three engines would allow me to operate in and our of smaller airports as well. Based out of LGA of course.

The second one is a little tougher, but I like cancidas' idea of getting a fighter for myself. I'd probably go with an F-16DJ. I'd try to base out LGA and flyby every Mets game.

I MIGHT revise my second aircraft.

why not just put "Derner" on there and trump Trump.

Shockingly, I'm actually not THAT egotistical.
I'm considering an E2-C Hawkeye as my second plane for a new way of local flight tracking. hmmmm.

A Sino Swearingen (SJ30) for short hauls and a BBJ or Global for longer trips

The list would go on and on and on for me. But, here are my choices for a start:
Two things I really dig are aerobatics and radial engine. So what's better than a modern SU-31 for me:
1567446
I'm also partial to the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine and the rare varieties of the rare P-51 as well, so I'd like to get a P-51C like this one:
1390992
I've always wanted to fly multi-engine as well. There's just something about pushing throttles forward and feeling the power of four props clawing skyward through the air. It would cost a fortune, but wouldn't it be cool to sponsor the restoration of the B-29 'Doc' in exchange for some left seat time?
1371176
A (slightly) more reasonable opportunity at a classic 4 engine prop liner would be a Connie (or in this case a Super-Connie) like this one:
1557663
There's one currently being restored in Salina, KS that I'm sure could use a sponsor:
1563877
But, for the occasional spin around Manhattan, a more realistic choice for classic multi-engine prop job for me would be flying a B-25 such as this one:
1497503
As far as jets go, I'd love to have one of these to tool around in: :D

Finally (for now), a 'reasonable' transportation choice would be one of these partly due to its 7000 nm range:

(sorry no pic on airliners.net)
Cheers!

I think for me.....
A Learjet 45XR for within the US (sample: http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6615800) - and - then for international, has to be my favorite biz-jet - a Global Express (sample: http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6324131).

I would get at GV for serious flying and a SR22 or DA-42 for short hopping :)
Why? Because Gulfstreams are just amazing airplanes to fly on. I have flown on G IV and liked it much better than BBJ. It truly felt like the king of business jets while BBJ was just a fancy 737.
For more personal flying, both Cirrus and Diamond make great aircraft. Now, if I could only fit in them...
Not asking for much here, so keep the fingers crossed :)

Spitfire Mk VIII ,considered the nicest flying of the breed, and a TBM850, at home at Somerset (2700 feet), or JFK.
