I realized today I had never seen a shuttle launch from inside the cockpit. Surely they must have cameras in there, I thought. Well, turns out they do, and there are a few vids on youtube...I'm guessing they got them from NASA's site but I haven't looked around there yet.

This is the best one I've found...soundtrack is just the crew talking to each other, not the usual "10, 9, 8, 7, 6..." The launch is mission STS-65 aboard Shuttle Columbia, July 8, 1994.

Wow. I'm surprised the film stands up to such high-g stress. That is very cool.

I'm guessing that's a reflection in the windshield.

The people in the back seats are indeed holding mirrors to look at instruments behind them.

are those instruments printed reversed so they look correct in the mirrors?

I wondered that too, I'm not sure.
