Deal Is Set to Reopen Air Travel in Much of Europe
PARIS — Swaths of the European sky are expected to reopen to commercial flights as early as Tuesday morning, with some small areas set aside as no-fly zones while the authorities monitor an ash cloud spreading from an Icelandic volcano, European officials announced Monday after an emergency meeting to address the travel chaos.
The agreement seemed to signal an easing of the worst peacetime air travel disruption ever, a nearly weeklong halt in flights that stranded thousands, cost airlines hundreds of millions of dollars and raised fresh questions about Europe’s ability to respond coherently to a crisis.
Under the agreement, aviation authorities would carve airspace above the continent into three zones — one closest to the volcano that would completely restrict air traffic, another zone that would set up partial restrictions on flights, and a third zone, free of ash, where flights could resume completely.
It was unclear precisely what portions of the continent’s airspace would be reopened when the agreement takes effect at 8 a.m. Tuesday Paris time, but the European Union’s transport commissioner, Siim Kallas, called the deal “good news for Europe’s stranded passengers.”
The no-fly zone would cover one-third of the airspace until now designated as contaminated, said Bo Redeborn, the director of network design of Eurocontrol, which coordinates regional air traffic management. Authorities said they would perform test flights and monitor air conditions every six hours.

Lufthansa A330-300 departed EWR for DUS
Lufthansa A340-600 departed EWR for MUC
Lufthansa A340-300 departed JFK for MUC
Air India 777-300ER departed EWR for Ahmadabad
Air France A380 departed JFK for CDG
Air France 777-200 departed JFK for BOD
KLM 747-400 departed JFK for AMS
Swiss A330-200 + A330-300 departed JFK for ZRH
Austrian 777-200 departed JFK for VIE
At least the Lufthansa aircraft were ferried empty back to Germany, Air France to BOD was full of passengers, not sure of the others. Continental operated additional flights to LIS and MAD today on the 762 and 764 respectively and upgrade OSL/ARN to the 764 as well. A KLM 747-400, KL643, departed AMS for JFK earlier this evening.

On friday there was a Saudi Arabian 777 with VIPs that landed here in Orlando from DC, I wonder if perhaps they were originally going to Europe but decided to head on down while Europe is closed and check out Minnie and Mickey? There was a caravan of black vehicles driving out from the FBO...
Martinair retrojet finally left back to AMS after 5 days. LH A330 and Virgin 747 were also stranded here.
Being stuck in Orlando, London, Miami, Paris, and any places that have many things to do and see can't be that bad if you're a tourist and/or retired. I think Selman and B. Drum both run the airliners gallery blog/digital image store. More pics and material to write about for their site.
Someone told me some of the Orlando parks were letting stranded tourists in for free.

Virgin's first flights out of JFK and EWR went out over the past couple hours, one more from JFK tonight and another from EWR at 8am Wednesday.
Just learned AI has been operating its usual nonstop flights to JFK via Cairo, will continue at least through Wed.
Air France is expecting to run 100% of its long hauls Wednesday, but warns of delays.
Lufthansa is operating 100% as of today.
KLM is running most long haul flights.
BA flew about 26 planes back to LHR today from overseas, but none from JFK or EWR yet. Hmm.
Tonight's Finnair JFK departure will operate, delayed until 3am.
