Back in July, Bob Lutz was quoted saying that the short-lived Pontiac G8 would live on as the Chevrolet Caprice, but about a week later he recanted his statements. It is now clear that his statements were partially true as GM unveiled its police-fleet only 2011 Chevrolet Caprice at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, in Denver, Colo. Unlike the initial rumors, the Caprice 9C1, also known as the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV), the Caprice will not be available for retail customers and it will be based off the Holden Statesman (which is the basis for the Middle East Chevy Caprice) not the Holden Commodore which was rebadged as the G8. Chevrolet will continue to offer Impala and Tahoe PPV models, but the Caprice should be the go to model for police and special service vehicle fleets.
