I always appreciated the LGA and EWR towers, but thought the previous "tower" at JFK was more akin to an office building.
I miss the EWR "toothbrush", it was unique unlike the new cookie cutter tower at EWR which can be found at several other airports around the US.

Yes, I miss the old EWR Tower, too. I guess it was shaped like a toothbrush. In the 80's, I got a tour of the old tower. The controllers' first name was Alyousis, but I can't remember the last. He gave me a nice tour. I remember that the radar screens looked ancient.

Must be tough to track him down. In New Jersey, that name is as common as Mike or John.

I've only seen photos of it. It did look old.

Yes, you are probably right as I toured Yankee Stadium last week and internally it's a dump too until you are brought outside. The field is in impeccable condition. I was a big fan of the 1964 NY World's Fair and Shea was built at the same time as the Fair, so it's demolition saddens me. The neon signs, as you say, were not in the original plan; they're unique. I too remember those lit fountains by the 3 chapels at JFK during the DC-8 and B707 Age. JFK was beautiful and friendly, too. Now if you loiter, you get chased-away. I used to sunbathe on the grass in front of the IAB as well as on the Pan Am Roof. Them days are gone!

Well I was at a meeting today and appearently those who thought the tower had landmark status were mistaken. The old tower will come down. The tower is connected to the concourse frame so there will be some fun there.

did they say how many gates AAL will lose during the demo/ deconstruction process?
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

I have not heard but will try and find out, unless AA777 knows? AA just added another ML gate and jetway on the west side of their concourse and very close to the present tower, looks pretty crowded over their.

And as far as the new tower it's been fun watchin it's progress on an almost daily basis as I pass right by it on the bus to work plus the top third is visble from our tower. For some reason in it's current stage of the construction it reminds of the Death Star under construction in Star Wars Episode 6.

    Regards
