Hellenic Imperial to Start ATH-JFK on June 24th

Hellenic Imperial Airways, a current Greek charter airline with ex-Lufthansa 747-200s, will begin 4xweekly scheduled flights between Athens and JFK starting June 24th. The airline has acquired two former Gulf Air aircraft to launch the new route, as well as launching flights to London-LGW from Athens. Unfortunately for spotters the flight will operate in the late evening hours:

Funny that they're using the old OA flight numbers.

Also very odd timing for the arrival and departure. I'm not sure this flight will do very well with the DL (JFK) and CO/UA (EWR) offerings having better timing and connection possibilities...

However, best of luck to Hellenic Imperial. Nice to see NYC linked to ATH by a Greek airline once again!

They currently fly the 742, but they will be using newly-acquired ex-Gulf Air A343s on the route.

Due to on-going negotiations concerning the lease of the two A340-300s Hellenic Imperial inaugurated the flight last night with the 747-200 and will continue to use the 747 until July 4th.

Wow, I'd love to see how they do on the route. Maybe I'll be able to catch the 742 as I'll be in New York for 9 days starting tomorrow!
