As many of you may remember, in 2007 a Congressional Gold Medal was presented to the Tuskegee Airmen in recognition of their service and sacrifices in World War II. Ivan McRae, of Dix Hills and a member of that esteemed group, was unable to attend the award presentation ceremony in Washington, DC. On Thursday, Congressman Steve Israel presented Mr. McRae with his copy of the medal at a ceremony at the American Airpower Museum. Joining Mr. McRae was his wife of 62 years, his children and grandchildren, along with area veterans, and students from the Edmund W Miles Middle School in Amityville.
The Congressman presented Mr. McRae with a flag flown over the US Capitol in his honor.
Mr. McRae flew B-25 Mitchel bombers. Here he describes the museum's B-25 to the Amityville students.
Mr. McRae adds his signature to the museum's Tuskegee Airmen Wall of Honor.
