Looking To Borrow Tools

this may be a long shot, but does anyone here have an engine hoist and transmission stand they would be willing to lend? i need to replace my truck's exhaust and engine mounts and don't have those two important pieces of equipment...

You may be able to do that job without those Matt. If you can get the truck high enough on ramps or jack stands and have a good jack. Get a strong wood block to put under the engine and disconnect the motor mounts. Then get the jack and lift the motor. Should be enough to clearance to get the mounts out. The exhaust is easy if you have room to work underneath.

Sounds a little risky for the engine there, but I agree on the exhaust being do-able with ramps.

i have to replace the exhaust manifolds, and there isn't enough room to do it without swinging the engine. the rest i can do from underneath. the engine mounts i could probably do just by lifting the engine, but i don't wanna play games with it. just want to take it out, replace parts and put it back together.

Why? They leaking? Only other thing would be a busted stud. Which could prob be done while still attached.

i have a transmission pan that you put on a hyrdaulic jack from when i changed the trans in my monte carlo, as for a engine stand, i might i have to remember who i let borrow it. but if you need the jack and pan let me know. also have 4 ramps you can use to get under the car easier, i do all my work in the street so anything else you might think of let me know, and i might just have

yeah, there's a pretty big hole in the right one, and the left side gasket is gone.

thanks for the offer, i really appreciate it and will let you know. the biggest part of this job is getting a couple days off where i don't need to move the truck. that doesn't look like it's going to happen until i go to Reno, in which case my truck goes into the shop. i really want to do it myself, just the more i think about it the less likely that becomes.

on another note, Northern Tool & Equipment has some really good prices on new jacks, stands and lifts. my next tax rebate may have already found a cause.

Matt, have you looked into places that rent tools? I usually find that although Northern has good prices (their catalog just came in the mail this week), if I can rent the tool and I'll probably use it only once, then renting is idea.

I rented a drywall lift from Home Depot last week. Perhaps give them a ring or check local rent-all shops.

i did, but neither of the 3 Home Depot stores near me have an engine lift or tranny jack.

Not surprising - you might want to try someplace that carries automotive tools...

Did you check places like Napa, Autozone, Pep Boys? I know they will loan/rent specialty tools.

i've tried all but the NAPA. there is one in my 'hood, though the hours are very strange and i'm never home when they're open. i've tried the two autozones i know of, no dice there.
