Interesting Plans for a new casino at Aqueduct Racetrack

Heard this on the radio the other day, found it interesting.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2009/0 ... plans.html

The radio story I heard included an interview with Steve Wynn who own the Mirage, TI, and Belagio among other Las Vegas resorts. He seems to have a lead in the bidding as they have all the cash needed for the project. If his bid is selected should be a first class place for sure.

Steve Wynn doesn't own any of those properties anymore. Mirage corp merged with MGM to become MGM Mirage, Wynn has nothing to do with them any longer. His current property in Vegas is the "Wynn" However if he's backing this I'd support it, his a very intelligent businessman who knows what he's doing. That area needs something like this to bring it back to life.

Stupid idea. If the state can't make money from racing, it should shut down the track and sell the land. Casinos in the Rockaways or Coney Island make sense, not in Ozone Park.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.

The New York Racing Association operates Belmont, Aqueduct, and Saratoga Racetracks. They are a private entity with no government affiliation. The New York State Racing and Wagering board has oversight of the track operations. Moving the Casino to Coney Island would be a no brainer, Rockaway has horrible public transportation and minimal infrastructure to support upgrades to the transit system. Coney Island has a brand new transit hub with multiple subway and bus lines. The prospect of a new amusement park in Coney is diminishing as the days go by, especially now that Thor equities, the group running a scaled down version of Astroland is failing. My interest still lies with NYRA running the Casino......Job Security!

Why your against increasing tax revenue for the state and creating a few jobs?

Actually Matt the state does pretty well from live horse racing taking a nice chunk of the handle. This is a win win no matter where it is. It turned around Delware park and it is a big hit in Yonkers and Bethlehem, PA. Also note that this isn't a casino. It's just slots and video poker. I love how they coined the phrase "racino" which is becoming a nice trend and again is only a home run for everyone involved.

Exactly, Rockaway is a terrible spot for this, Coney Island isn't much better. Aqueduct is right next to JFK and is a fine location.

Oh no. does this mean Nick is going to be staying in Queens for the winter months now?!?!

The Aqueduct is horrible for public transportation and traffic. The surrounding highways are already SEVERELY strained with traffic at all hours, and there are just very few bus/train options.
