Phelps Eats 12,000 Calories a Day!

    From the Post http://www.nypost.com/seven/08132008/ne ... 124248.htm:

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase "Breakfast of Champions" by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.

He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Christ. His cholesterol must be through the roof. Either that or he should be a spokesman for Lipitor.

You'd be surprised how healthy he still might be. I was eating 10 eggs a day for a long time, on top of other greasy stuff, and I literally just got some blood-work back....my LDLs are 78, and a perfect EKG. But I'll probably die before the age of 30 by getting hit by a bus or something.

Although I have to say that sugar can often slow you down, but the man is an animal, so he's gotta be doin something right.

There has to be something that makes him faster than everyone else ever. I'm guessing superhuman metabolism could be part of it. The article also makes it sound like he might be eating this way just for the Olympics, not all the time... since he has so many events in such a short period of time, he needs lots of energy and lots of protein to repair between races.

Sooner or later (I'm thinking sooner), his arteries are going to have a flow identical to that of the Van Wyck.

I just heard more about his training regimen...he's in the pool 5 hours a day, swimming the equivalent of 18,000 yards, about 10 miles. And not just doggy paddling of course, but doing resistance exercises while swimming, including towing a weighted buoy around.

But what can happen? There isn't much wrong with what he eats. It's mostly just a high-carb diet. You're saying he's going to get fat? Define 'healthy'.

What i don't get is how he is able to swim 5 miles a day (as they said he does) after eating so much???

I don't know if anyone ever tried swimming after a heavy meal, but this it isn't pretty and you do feel a lot heavier and clumsier...

I was wondering that, too. If I ate a whole pizza I would barely be able to walk for a couple of hours, nevermind swim. I guess his digestive system is superhuman too.

NBC had a neat graphic of his crazy proportions. He is 6'4", but his legs are only the average height of a 6ft tall man...the extra 4 inches coming from his lanky torso...and his arms are the correct length of a person 6'8"!
