Delta/ASA plane 3 seconds from colliding.

ATLANTA -- A Delta 757 and an Atlantic Southeast regional jet came within three seconds of a disastrous runway collision Friday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Without clearance from the tower, ASA flight 876 to Greensboro, N.C. crossed runway 27-right at 10:10 a.m. just as Delta flight 261 roared down that same runway, taking off for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The ASA crew failed to comply with ATL ATC directions to remain short of runway 27R. The 757 had already passed V2 speed and was committed to rotate. The irony here is if that 757 hadn't been past V2 speed or any heavier we wouldn't be talking about a "near miss" right now. We'd be talking about a major catastrophe.

Something tells me there are two ASA pilots looking for a new job at this point.

The acknowledged and disregarded (according to the article) - clearly the ASA crews fault.

It is not supriseing to me that we are talking about ASA in this case. I heard about this incident elsewhere as well.
