Students for Concealed Carry on Campus

is an organization that is trying to prevent colleges from banning legally concealed weapons on campuses. They feel that had students at VA Tech been allowed to do so, that the rampage would have been stopped sooner. This would only apply to students 21 years old or older who have gone through all of the background checks and training as anyone else would. They protest the existing laws by wearing empty holsters.

Here is a video from Washington Journal with a debate on the organization.

The one guy siad that the VA Tech shooter was 23, and that he would have qualified to carry a gun....which is not true. He had a restraining order against him and would not have passed the background check.

Otherwise, I think it's a good idea. I'd almost consider wearing an empty holster myself.

I don't see a need for guns on campus. Its a place for higher learning not the OK Corral... All campuses have security, give them guns but not the students. Does anyone else but me find it sad we are going to arm our college students? I'm sorry but guns do not belong on University campuses.

If this should ever pass as a legislation, I'll consider dropping out of college. As a freshman, nothing would make me feel more unsafe than having students walking around campus with guns. Like Tommy said, universities are places of education and are usually pretty safe. Most of them have good security forces (Arizona definitely does) and there is really no need to give guns to students.
But let's assume for fun that this proposal does in fact pass as a legislation. So my fellow student Bob clears some background checks, receives training, and is allowed to carry a gun with him on campus - a million things could still happen that results in me being shot by Bob. He could go insane; he could be fighting off terrorists and I get caught in the crossfire; he could get drunk and shoot me by mistake, etc. See my point?

Oh sure, College, where Binge-Drinking is considered a hobby, and they want them to carry concealed weapons, they must be nuts

I can see it now, accidental shootings up to 400 a week

Good points Omar. You're introducing an object that can cause great harm if Bob does go nuts, I'd rather have Bob go nuts without a gun and perhaps throw a text book across the classroom then shoot the classroom up. What happened at Virgina Tech got out of hand because the administration failed to take action when the first shootings were reported. If they locked the Campus down and had Police on hand none of that would have taken place.

College students have enough to worry about without having to stress out over if the person sitting next to them has a gun or not. I truly fail to see how arming a campus will improve the safety of the students. I'm generally conservative with my views but if my University I recently graduated from allowed this I think I'd burn my diploma. It's very upsetting to me this might be allowed to happen in America.

Instead of arming students, let's try rational gun laws properly enforced.

guns on campus are a bad idea. when i was in school we weren't allowed to carry on campus and we were ARMY. nobody needs to carry a gun on campus, so why should they? i can understand that if someone is properly trained and lisenced to carry a firearm then they could prove to be an asset in such situation like the VTech massacre but i think we should focus attention on preventing such situations.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

I am ALL for gun laws and having properly screened and trained people carry them.

However, I think that it makes sense to NOT have them on campus. There are circumstances though. Some students mght be police officers, or some who actually use a weapon for work.

Otherwise, the average student should not be carrying them.

HOWEVER, VA Tech would not have killed so many people if the college had a properly armed security force, or if there were better emergency procedures.

I don't think that VA Tech management is at fault, but it's certainly a lesson for the future.
