    American Gothic on Long Island

Stopped by Eisenhower Park to have some lunch today, and found surreal this scene. A 25 foot tall sculpture based on the famous American Gothic painting was being installed in a field in the park. They were in the middle of installing the parts when I got there, and it attracted quite a crowd of curious onlookers.

Here's a look at the finished sculpture. I'll have to go back one morning to get some shots when it's not backlit.

And a little background on what it's all about.

Nassau installs sculpture in Eisenhower Park

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - A 25-foot-tall sculpture by artist J. Seward Johnson is being installed in Eisenhower Park on Long Island. The sculpture is inspired by the iconic Grant Wood painting "American Gothic." It's on temporary loan from The Sculpture Foundation, which encourages the placement of public art. The work is being installed near Parking Field 6 in the massive park, which is located in central Nassau County. A huge crane will lift parts of the huge sculpture into the air and set them on top of one another _ first the giant pants and skirt of a man and woman, next the torsos and then the heads.

How do you know it was funded by the tax payers? It may very well have been money donated by someone. I think its pretty cool.

 Kids today. Don't know art when it stares them right in the face.

Well don't get me wrong, I never said it was a bad statue or a bad painting to begin with. Personally, I've never found the appeal with the painting itself. Then to have a 20 foot statue of a man with a pitchfork just creeps me out. :P

Then again, I never saw how a can of soup could be "art" either.
