Up on the Roof... LGA style

Had the opportunity to go on the roof of the CTB today so I took camera in tow. This was used once as an observation deck but is off limits now. It is a shame because it is such a great view. The resturant on the roof is such wasted space also.

    Notice the old gate signs...

nice shots of LGA. It would be nice to see that deck open to the public.

if it were to be opened to the public, would it be possible to screen pax through TSA and send them up there?
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

Wouldn't have to because technically it is before the checkpoint. PANYNJ will never open it because the roof is in such bad shape plus now with AC units and all sorts of stuff added the liability is too great. I was scared walking in some spots as it was so spongy.

Great pics, ems. Did you notice any other nostalgic stuff up there besides the old gates sign?

No, not really. I have been up there a few times for various projects. The resturant area looks gutted so nothing there.

PANYNJ plans to redo the whole roof next year but they won't open it up to the public, no $$ in it.

LOL, I wanted it for our operations center but PANYNJ wanted too much. We settled for the old TWA ambassadors suite below the restaurant.

There was even some unofficial chatter about moving the PA offices up to the 4th floor, but the prospects for any development up there nowadays are prettymuch nil. The place will be gone in about 10 years, and from what I've seen of the proposed CTB modernization plans, there may be some nice vantage points. Not sure about an outdoor observation deck, but at this stage of the game, anything's possible.

    Heck, I'll pitch it tomorrow!

Nice shots and great view, thanks for sharing with us ! When I started at LGA in late 1985 the deck had already been closed a few years but the resturant stayed open to I think 1987. Only ate there a few times, mediorce food and service and very overpriced but the views where awesome, with floor to ceiling windows that where around 2 stories high, and it was slightly above the closed deck, as you could look down on it.

    Regards

Great pics. I think I remember visiting the deck when I was a kid ('70s), but don't recall the restaurant, can anyone tell us more about it or better yet, does anyone have any pics of it?

My dad took me a few times , If I remember right at the time it was a turnstyle which you paid something like .35 to get up there, we would stay for hours. It was amazing . Going back to see that would bring back lots of memories.
