What camera system are you using? I'm assuming you're a digital guy and use a DSLR. If you're a Canon guy ... as I am ... I can offer you the following for starters.

I use a circa-2003 Canon D-60 DSLR and have an attachment called the Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller. I works like a charm and is probably just what you're looking for. Amazon is offering it for around $128-130 and if you plan to use it enough ... it's a good investment.

Look up this item on Google and you'll get all the information you need ... and then some!. BTW ... you will need a steady support such as a tripod for optimum results.

i use the settings on my D70. still don't have a cable release but so far i haven't needed one, haven't encountered the need for one. the cam will open the shutter for up to 30 seconds.

Alright, so that remote is what I need? I will try to remember to pick one up.

I'm a little confused here...are you asking about time-lapse photography, where you shoot multiple pictures over a certain time increment (every 10 seconds, or every 10 minutes), or, as Mike and Matt C seem to be replying to, looking to take long shutter-time shots, for night photography? Two very different things, with two very different requirements.

Shooting with a Canon, for time-lapse photography, you can use a software program called DSLR Remote. Connect your camera to a PC or laptop via the USB port, and with the software, you can shoot multiple pictures at pre-determined intervals, saving them directly to your hard drive. There are a ton of other functions in the program as well. Sorry Nikon guys, it only comes in a Canon version.

If you are looking to do long shutter-time photos, then a tripod, or some other way of securing the camera is necessary. Your camera will run up to a 30 second shutter opening, anything longer than that you need to be in "Bulb" mode. To avoid camera shake when tripping the shutter, you really need a remote. For the Rebel series, you can get an IR remote, the Canon one is actually rather inexpensive. Unfortunately, they didn't equip the higher end Canons with an IR port for the remote (the IR remote won't work with my 30D). Canon makes a radio controlled remote, which is rather pricy, however there are a bunch of inexpensive aftermarket versions online that are supposed to work just as well (I have one on order, should arrive any day now - I'll let you know how it works).
