KUWAIT - State carrier Kuwait Airways Corp will invest nearly $6 billion to modernise its ageing aircraft fleet, Chairman Sheikh Talal Mubarak al-Sabah said on Wednesday.
“The plan is to buy up to 30 aircraft by 2015 and later increase the fleet to 55,” he said.
Kuwait Airways held discussions with Airbus EAD.PA and Boeing Co. BA.N this month on the planned overhaul but is yet to decide on the order, likely to be made in May, he said.
Talal said in February KAC was considering Boeing’s 777 and 767 aircraft, and Airbus’s A350 and A340 planes.
Some of the carrier’s 17 existing aircraft have been in operation since 1992, a year after most of its aircraft were destroyed during Iraq’s invasion of the country.
