Yes the DC10 was designed with AA's request in mind for a widebody that could operate into LGA , but would also have US transcon range.

The US Millitary contracts commercial flights based on predetermined rates depending on a number of factors , in short they are the most profitable part of any charter airline's business .

Interesting that the fuel efficiency doesn't matter for military charters. Phil, maybe you have some insight on this, but I'm guessing it must be because these flights are extraordinarily profitable since they can charge the government pretty much whatever they want.

It doesn't exaclty "not matter" nor can the carriers "charge the government whatever they want." On a daily basis, fuel costs are kept to a minimum through tankering through costly stations, optimal dispatching, and other means. It's best not to go through how the government prices their rewards, but there are limitations. There are also potential charges accured through extraordinary situations. It's not as cut and dry as it may seem.

Phil summed it all up though, it's cheaper than the military moving the troops themselves. I also believe the carriers might do a better job scheduling around delays and minimizing downline effects....thus keeping things moving. :)

In regards to military charters, it should also be noted that there is a pool of sorts, and airlines are awarded the charter flights. In addition there are many rules involved with doingmilitary charters, one being that military charters are not allowed to account for more than 60% of an airline's business.
