Definitely not 5pm, I was up at Eagle Rock and saw it coming in for arrival at about 4:15. I hope this isn't permanent, AI is one of the few 747 operators left at EWR.

She flew into CDG today so I'm assuming this is the continuation.
WOW now all she needs to do is come to JFK on while I have a camera handy and my life will be complete.

I think she was a sub today guys so nothing to worry about. Air India is in the process of returning some of their leased 747s.
Ah, earlier then...those flytecomm estimates do change.... :) ....Originally Posted by NcSchu
Sad to see 747s go of course, and EWR has been losing its share to be sure, but then again, it was never a 747 hub to begin with..and Air India is a recent airline there.
I believe the first regularly scheduled 747s into EWR were People Express followed by Virgin Atlantic (unless UA snuck one in there earlier at some point - but they kept those stretch DC-8s into EWR until the bitter end).
Hard to say what the first ever 747 into EWR was... likely some ad hoc cargo with relatively little fanfare.

I can tell you for sure United had the first schedule 747 service at EWR, my photos dating back to 76.Originally Posted by Tom_Turner

1976 Mike !!! I had no idea... decent chance that was the first then since EWR really didn't go International (I don't think) until much later and probably no 2nd & 3rd tier 747 carriers at that time...Originally Posted by FlyingColors

She was United's San Fran / EWR flight ...haaa, now thats style! And my first eyes on a 747 too. What wonderful days, to just walk right up to the gate and gaulk.Originally Posted by Tom_Turner
EWR's big Internation kick off was with TWA in 1978 using 707's. That one flight (can't recall at this hour, either London or one of the islands) would arrive in the North Terminal with a make shift customs layout there! Departed out of Terminal A, with a jubilee banner across the jetway stating the new service.

suggests leased 744s are being returned, but gives no indication if the 744s are completely off from BOM-CDG-EWR.
I would expect BOM-LHR-JFK to stay as a 744, given the high traffic on all segments, but I guess the 77W could possibly take over the route once AI receives them.
