I knew about this for months....it was posted here too ![]()
From now on, whenever they are going to close the intrepid and tow her away, I will PM you to make sure you are in the loop![]()
Not to worry, were all here for ya 8)
The three most common expressions in aviation are, "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Crap".
see...I knew someone was slacking...today it is me. I just hadn't read about it before.
I wanted to know more about those areas off limits to the public, hopefully we can see em this time around.
On 1010 wins yesterday they mentioned the Ship would be moved for painting on Nov 6th. Any idea where/when they might move the Concorde, it would be great to get some more barge shots like I did back on that very cold morning in Nov 2003 ?

Hi Ron.
The Concorde seems to be on its own dedicated barge these days on the other side of the pier from the Intrepid itself, so I am not sure it is going to be moved anywhere -- although I suppose it might get repositioned..who knows - but no guarantee.
I believe the Nov 6th date might refer to Intrepid moving from Bayonne to Staten Island since the re-hab and modifications will be done in two stages... but I don't have my sources right now. Believe the move to Bayonne is probably imminent - early this waek perhaps?
Perhaps someone has exact information?

I am surprised as well that South Street Seaport Museum will not take it at least for the reasons provided.
“It would be a nice little draw for a little while,” said Jeff Remling, director of operations at the South Street Seaport Museum. But, he said, “We just can’t physically get it in here.”
I would've thought the north side of Pier 17 could accomodate the barge.
<<Besides, Mr. Remling added, a late-20th-century plane would not exactly fit with his museum’s 19th-century maritime theme.>>
Hardy Har Har.. I don't think the mall quite goes with the museum's 19th Century maritime theme either, but there it is!!
Seriously though, I can see that the north side of Pier 17 is more appropriately used for transient Tall Ships or similar and a three year committment is a long time. Plus if the Intrepid Museum is so strapped they want to sell the barge itself, I don't see South Street Seaport picking up the slack there..they have their own expenses - the Wavertree is only marginally restored from what it could be after 25+ years of sitting there.
Mr. Remling does however underestimate the drawa concorde though....
There really aren't alot of other places around manhattan - expecially without the barge!!!! How ridiculous can you get? Intrepid Museum seems to have bitten off more than it can chew.
Chelsea Piers would be a possibilitiy, but they're not wanting for more traffic really, but I would guess their customer vessels pay well to park there.
The only other three spots I think that would sit well with BA would be the Battery Park city Marina - mostly closed since 911, and the vacant gangways at Battery Park proper where the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Ferrys depart... OR the mostly restored former Staten Island Ferry (last used Governor's Island Ferry slips - where the plane would be seen by many -at a distance but as a billboard.
I am guessing one of these is where concorde will end up...but the Intrepid Museum will look for some Port Authority/Municipal/Govt waiving of alll costs...and the donation of a barge.
In my world of course, Concorde would be brought to Floyd Bennett as a corner stone of an enormous civil aviation Museum with dozens of classic airiliners. :)
We'll see..

Of course, there is the Harlem park on the Hudson build over the (former?) Sewage Treatment plant. The park has mixed reviews, but it has a dock of sorts.

I even heard of the closing in California & also read it on this website.....Originally Posted by Corey

I have a nice spot in my backyard where they can store it. :D
On a serious note though, I really do hope they find a good temporary home for it, and yeah, I'm very surprised they're having problems, I would have though a lot of places would want it.

A bit off topic but have they ever done this with the Queen Mary in Long Beach? It would seem they would need to.
Probably in the future....Originally Posted by T-Bird76

:(
I knew about it, because I knew I wouldn't get to New York in time to see it. This means I'll be back again, even before I've arrived the first time.

I'd offer up my backyard but the neighbors might oppose ;)
I was thinking similar as above, its already on a barge, so perhaps keepin it on the barge and floating it to another convenient locale?
And I, I took the path less traveled by
and that has made all the difference......yet...
I have a feeling a handle of people are going to be very interested in what I post in the near future.
