    Amelia Earhart

I was thinkin about her the other day, and I was curious as to what you folks thought.

Aviation forums are so full of heated discussion about TWA800 and so forth, but how about some of the older stuff?

What do you think happened to Amelia?

That's an interesting question. I've always been intriged by what happened to her, and have seen several programs on Discovery or TLC that looked at what may have happened.

One of the best researched was done by TIGHAR - The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. They theorize she landed at Gardner Island - probably on the reef in low tide, southeast of her intended target Howland Island. They think she and Fred Noonan survived for some time after they landed, eventually succumbing to illness, injury or thirst.

They have had several expeditions to the island, and present their theory here:

They also have a new book, to be published later in September, which lays out the evidence to support this theory.

BTW, many years ago, as a gift, I received a small, soft-sided briefcase, yes, that's right, it was "Amelia Earhart" brand luggage. How smart is that, naming a luggage brand after someone who disappeared in an airplane?
