    RAF L1011 at IAD (PIX)

I know this is out of the way but I thought some would find this interesting. Rafal from DC informed me about a RAF L-1011 that landed at IAD last night around 8pm or so. Thankfully it was overcast or I would not have been able to get a shot.
I left at 1245am and returned home at 1145am :)

Wow, crazy. Great catch. And what's that 757?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.

Pfff Senga, you call that a good shot.....check out my awesome action shot (taken from a distance of 3 miles after she departed 30)!

I know, the shot sucks, but now I've got my "at least I can say that I saw it" shot. Senga, I love your shot and your determination to get it - not even in my wildest dreams would I do a trip like that! :P

    Regards,

Gothamspotter, I don't know much about this 757. I will ask on the BALT-Wash spotters group. I'm sure they will know. Probably come big business company plane.

Yes, I agree That's why I went. Its nearly impossible to get an L1011 even more so then a 707 it seems. So when I know one is in the area I take advantage of it. I have always wanted the RAF L-1011 as well. Its in an older RAF Livery as well witch adds to the motivation.

Wow Omar..I didn't know you were out there. I as going to call Tony O to let him know just in cause he was there!..He says we just missed each other by like Miniutes..As I was leaving I did see an SUV park where I was maybe that was he.
What time did the RAF tristar take off?

BTW If you recall...My Current Avatar RAF VD_10 was another one of my NYC-Dc drives!

Its hard to get the motivation to drive all that way for something. But I think about how I will feel after I got it and sitting at my computer afterwards so it pays off.
I mean when I see shots form previous times it puts it all in perspective for me. Like this and my avatar.
As most of you know that is probably my most cherished aircraft.

    Gothamspoter,
You asked about the Comco 757. It is the replacment of another aircraft the company used to have witch was an Ex US air 737-200. I spotted ti at ADW a few years back.

Anyway heres the description I put in the remarks.
L-3 is the name of the corporation.
L-3 Communication develops communication systems and support equipment for space, air, ground, and naval programs.

see RAF L-1011s cycle thru Vegas when they are supporting fighter ops out of Nellis, also the occasional VC-10(My Favorite)
The beehive hummm of the JT9D and GE CF680C2,the thunder of the JT8D-17,the rumble of the PW1830 and the high ,thin whine of the PW 545A are all music to my ears!

Ahh, interesting. They're a pretty large military/intelligence contractor headquartered in NYC.

727C47, Yes the VC-10 is one of my most fav planes and probably top 3 I'd say. My current avatar the VC-10.....I took that shot at the same ramp space I shot the L-1011 :)

    Gotham,
I didn't know they were based in NYC. The aircraft spends a lot of time in Montana....Maybe they have some operations out there too.

before the 747 entered the airways in '70,the BOAC VC-10s , were the most exotic thing flying into Kennedy, (except for maybe the Loftleider Cl-44s),I loved the WHOOOOOSH! of the RR Conway engines, and that delicately ,exquisitely curved wing, and tailplane. We lived on short final for 13L,just after the pylon turn ,every 90 seconds in the 60s-70s, great stuff, memories, dawn-late night, first and second generation jets, screaming their hearts out at 500AGL, along with the last of the big props. When I flew a DC-3 freighter into JFK in '94,and was assigned the Canarsie approach over the old sod,I swear I had tears in my eyes. You have great taste in airplanes Senga, and prodigious skills as a a photographer, cheers and Godspeed !

Thanks for the kind words 727C47. Yes, I have always been obsessed over the oldschoolers. Gotta get them while you still can. Every time we shoot one of those you are shooting a piece of history (first generation jet airliners) that won't be around in 10 years. When all those planes are just a memories it would have been worth it to know I was in their awesome presence.
