JFK 1-23-13 [US Air Steelers, JetBlue Deicing Fluid]
-
That airplane did indeed come in from SYR and that is what you call a great deice job. Actually, I am watching the Steelers jet taxi out to depart from the tower as we speak.
-
A very nice surprise this morning. Hows the weather up there in the tower?
-
Nice catch ..... I got that Steeler plane a while back in some ugly light so I am hoping to catch under better conditions.
-
I've only ever caught the Steelers jet from the terminal at CLT and it was cloudy out and it was parked at an angle that made getting a shot nearly impossible.
-
Wow I just cought N636JB recently I dont remember it looking that bad. gotta look back on my shots. Oh btw did u happened to catch N531JL? if u did, that was my mother's flight back from BQN this morning
-

Yeah, you WANT your planes to look just like that when it is cold and snowing on the runway :)

Jason, You are a diehard to go out there today. If I went I would need deicing fluid!
-
When I flew out of Newark last week, it was the first time I've been on a flight that needed to be deiced. It was a twenty minute delay, but seeing the symphony of high-tech deicing trucks surrounding about 8-10 United planes lined up before sunrise, was a treat.

haha! Well, I rolled up to Costco, sat in my car with the engine running, only getting out for US Air. I was just thankful they were on 31!
-
UPDATE!
Well, fellas. Looks like we will have a second chance. The Astrojet is on its way back up to JFK from FLL right now, ETA 10:15pm. It then departs again at 6:40am tomorrow, but will be back yet again at 9:45pm again tomorrow.
-
Mark/Steve, the Steelers plane comes to PHL on a somewhat regular basis, pop down here for a visit and you may get lucky
And good luck with the Astrojet folks

Ya gotta love the convenience of the Costco lot. Until Aunt Matilda and Uncle Charlie call 911 on you after they load their trunk with groceries.
Happened to me. I no longer wear my black coat and sunglasses. Instead, I wear the brightest color I own and smile at everyone.
-
Never had an issue at Costco.
-
Even if there is no regi listed, when a A319 shows on Flightaware it will likely be one of the specials... almost every time. I have waited for them for almost a year straight at JFK and finally they start to put a lot of them on JFK route.
Also interesting is whenever they are on 31s, Air Canada Dash 8 almost always leaves from 31R. Did it again today... and then pulls hard right right over the LGA ILS 31 approach... fun to watch.

One of the worst things about super cold sunny days, is heat distortion. It may be counter intuitive but if you know how it works, it makes sense... SUCKS for us... add a nice strong breeze and it simply [blows]

I don't always mind the "aesthetic" heat distortion brings to backgrounds. When it's affecting the aircraft itself, it's a real bummer.
Manny, I still love your Emirates with tower- great overall feel.
One time I shot with a 600mm right down Las Vegas blvd. (south of KLAS). Great perspective of heavies landing in front
of the hotels. After processing, I realized heat rising off the road had distorted the aircraft even though it
looked ok through the lens. This was ten+ years ago and I was shooting film, so no LCD preview screen. :frown:

Don, OUCH... I know how it felt back then... I shot slides pretty much exclusively... mostly Ektachrome for indoor sports and Kodachrome for the rest... I hated when I made the slightest mistake... Never mind WB, a slight exposure mishap and they were RUINED... At least film had a lot of headroom and dynamic range... slides were brutal. I look at my only remaining Film camera, an old Nikon F5 and wonder how I even FOCUSED!!! I used the split prism focus aid well, but nothing beats AF!!

i still think that warmer days is when it creates more heat distortion. I was in Puerto Rico last year spotting and believe it or not the warmer and even the the humitity creates more heat distortion which really stinks.
Here is an example I get a shot of this USAirways 762 landing at TJSJ and i get alot of heat distortion
