Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
Speculation from an earlier thread is now official.
No more Wunala or any other Qantas 747s as of July 5th Australia time. This probably means the last one will leave Australia on July 4th, arriving at JFK on the 5th.
JFK service reduced to 5x weekly, all on two class A332.
This is a major cut in capacity, about 1075 seats weekly.
Will update with final flight info as it comes in.

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th

I doubt she is retiring anytime within the next year. Yea they are replacing their 747 fleet but Wunala will be the last one to go. But were losing her before that. I hope they send her in again before they shift to these busses. I would love to see a 3rd Dreaming. I would lvoe to see it on a 747-8 but sadly Qantas doesnt have any orders in for the 747-8.

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
not yet, but I think it will be in there future when the program is fully developed and stabalized. I think there fear was a similar 787 delay saga happening to this program as well.

I was looking at the Qantas Schedule for August. It shows a mix of A330 and 747 service for NY.

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
Aren't there a couple cool A330 schemes though?
And, oh, I still don't have Wunala. I better get on it.

Phil as a birthday gift to you, you can have some of my Wunula shots ;) LOLOL Interestingly enough I've captured her plenty of times but never at JFK.

Phil, unfortunately the only A330 scheme is a -200 in the OneWorld colors.
The schedule will be as following:
Quote:
QF107 LAX0900 – 1725JFK 332 x24
QF108 JFK1855 – 2210LAX 332 x24
They way it will work is QF25/26 will be an A330 to LAX from AKL and QF107/108 will be a 747-400 to LAX from SYD.

You see, Phil? Age is only a number. Tom is older than both of us combined! pendejo viejo! LOL
Tom, you need to hit those fish oils!

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
I haven't shot Wunala either. I guess it would help if I ventured out to JFK more than twice a year.

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
Crap - I need to take a trip to NY for Wunala - all I have is at 10,000' over the JFK VOR on the way to 13R.
ahhhh...wait - memory kicking in....I remember this - Kenny - Oh crap - will I make the customs building before she lands - giving Nick V his borrowed battery back - cursing about little juice in the battery - then speeding away..next morning - shivering in the cold at Bayswater - I got her - but the #$%#$#%$ was backlit :)

No source but I keep saying "I think". Seriously though think about it. They keep Wunala really clean take really good care of her and shes always in tip top shape. Because of that I personally think she will be the last to go. Though it would be between EB "Philip Island", JS "Socceroo" and our fav EJ "Wunala Dreaming"

I need to get to LAX to hope to get her.

More logically speaking, Wunala is the newest 747 in the Qantas fleet and one of six -400ERs.

Just because its an ER means nothing. VH-OED was a ER and it was 1/3 that they dropped a few months ago.

Mark, good times sir! Good times!
Here's my tribute to her.
http://images3.jetphotos.net/img/2/3...1219878503.jpg
It is something new to shoot. Not for nothing, but if it couldn't be the B747, I'd prefer the A330. While the B747 will always be the single most majestic bird in the skies, the lines on the A330 are so sleek that the bird almost screams "Hot Rod." It could be worse, they could have ordered B77W's and sent them here.
-
Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
Actually Nick, -OED was delivered to Malaysia Airlines in 1991 as a 9M-MHO and IS NOT an ER. When it was delivered to Qantas in 1998 they just kept the GE engines. The fact that Wunala is an ER DOES mean something since the aircraft have the extra range.
-
Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
Gordon's right. Same applies to B747-4H6 VH-OEC (former MH 9M-MHN and non-ER) and B747-48E VH-OEB (former OZ HL7416 and non-ER).

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th

Yea I know EB isnt an ER but they did paint it in OW colors so i'm figuring it to be one of the last. Note they havent painted any 747's aside from EB and JS.

Well, you didn't seem to think that -OED wasn't and -OEB is in the same situation. Just because they painted -OEB in the revised scheme, then in the One World, and now in a new scheme doesn't really mean much. -OEB will be retired in due time seeing as it was a second hand acquirement in their fleet and is older then most 747s. Like I mentioned before, your best argument for why Wunala will be one of the last 747s retired is because it is the newest 747 in Qantas' fleet. End of story hombre.

Eh you forget JS. THE WAR ISNT OVER YET!

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
So? VH-OJS just happened to be painted in the revised scheme because it went in for some routine check. The Qantas 747 fleet will be completely retired eventually as they receive more A380s and at some point the 787. As per which 747s are retired in what order is completely up to Qantas and something we do not know and can merely contemplate. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the 747 returns JFK in the near future.

JS is socceroo. They didnt paint it just cause it was in a hanger. I know it will be over time. I hope your right on that Iberia. I would love Wunala to return.

Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
A330s are invading transatlantic and now transpacific routes too RATAS INMUNDAS!
Didn't even see the mating Kangaroo scheme during my 2 trips to JFK.
I expected maybe I'll have a chance someday at LAX, but this invasion of A330 is gonna make it harder.
-
Re: Last Day of Qantas 747s at JFK: July 5th
@ Nlovis and Iberia: ladies, please. you're both beautiful.
@ Mati, mating Kangarooo???? What did I miss?

Three Kangaroos chasing after each other into the other side of the plane that's not visible. Use your imagination..
Another observation, the flying tobacco aka flying snorkel aka A340-600 is everything except beautiful (just telling the truth)
