NEWARK -- A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport this morning when its right main landing gear failed to extend, authorities said. The incident briefly shut down the airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
United Airlines Flight 634 from Chicago with 53 people aboard landed safely at 9:27 a.m. at Newark, its intended destination, United spokesman Robin Urbanski said in a statement.
Passengers were evacuated and there were no injuries, according to the Port Authority. There were 48 passengers and five crew members on board.
The plane's right main landing gear did not extend, though its nose and left main landing gear did, said Arlene Salac, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authoritym, said the incident briefly shut down the airport.
Flights have resumed but the incident has closed a runway, causing delays of up to 45 minutes for departing flights, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airplane, an Airbus 319, left Chicago's O'Hare International Airport just before 6 a.m., bound for Newark, according to the United Airlines website. Authorities did not explain what went wrong with the landing gear.
ABC news, however, showed a photograph of what appears to be the disabled plane parked on the runway, with its right wing touching the ground, surrounded by emergency vehicles.
A few flights diverted to JFK as a result. I was out on the ramp when an AA 737 came in which is very rare at JFK. Even JFK tower asked what it was doing at JFK.
I saw it, was pretty nuts. The one day I forget my phone. Good job diego
The PHL Spotters forum is reporting PHL got a CO 752W and 2 CO 739's diversions. Being a Sunday morning (light traffic) and severe clear conditions I'm sure many flights had less hold fuel onboard than during heavier traffic times and less ideal weather.
My 2 cents
LGA777
yeah, we had GREAT shots of it until port authority took all of our memory...more details to come.
Bill
Good stuff Bill.. way to go!
Tom
Who would have thought I'd be at EWR shooting yet another crashed plane. Three crashed planes in 2.5 years. I am on a roll!

I moved the info into the other thread, this thread should be about the Gear Collapse as Phil noted below.
PAPD are all full of themselves after that huge bust of that mastermind criminal who DEFIANTLY TRESPASSED
last Sunday night!!!!

Derf, there's another threads in the spotter blotter discussing this. People are speaking up. I personally disagree with some of your statements, but people are voicing their opinion.
I think taking their cards is a big no-no, but I also think that just "putting spotlights" on it is not necessarily helpful. But we can discuss that in the other thread perhaps.
Sorry Phil, today was my Little Jack Jack's 6th birthday and I have not had much time to read the forums... I will look for the other thread now. I am sorryQuote:

I will expect the swat team and started the coffee
Argh! I was listening into the tower feed Sunday morning and just missed this excursion. Out of all days...
Was this the reason runway 29 was active? The circle-22-to-29 approach was also in use, I noticed.
The wounded A319 sat on 4L the majority of the day. Most arrivals used 29, but most of the heavies still stuck with 22L.
WTF- damn news said last night a crane was helping move her (last night) so the runway would be all clear today.Quote:

Did anyone get some pics of them moving her off the runway?!
So my "spy in EWR" reports she is in the United hanger being repaired. Noted seeing the ripped up engine coweling.
That is correct, the tail is hanging out of the hanger on the north end by DHL parkingQuote:

Thanks for the update anyhow.
Cool to know the plane can be banged up a bit and be fixed good as new.
I stumbled across a video of the landing on youtube.. if you're at work or have small kidaroud when watching it, you might want to mute the volume as there is some cursing going on in the backround
I wont forget that day thats for sure, Me and a few other NYCA spotters were there at the time taking shots
Thanks for posting the video :borat:
I saved it because you know its gonna get deleted!
