USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Not aviation unless she is carrying a few helicopters or a V-22 I guess, but for those interested the newest USS New York arrives in New York City on Monday Novemeber 2nd, 2009 at 7:30AM by the Verazzano.
The ship contains 7.5 tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center site.
Should be some good photo ops, here is the complete schedule

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
is the ship going to be "parkin" by the verranzano bridge until the ceremony, or is that where it's going to be held?

I believe there is a V-22 aboard or has the capacity to carry it.

Cool, I believe it can accomodate 2 V-22's or three helocopters. It would be great to see a V-22 on her.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
i'm wondering if it would be better to go under the vaerranzano or the west side. my gut tells me that the west side is going to be crammed to it's fullest meaking a good clear shot hard to come by.

You'll get better views from under the VZ but miss the 21 gun salute by Ground zero

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Where's the best place to park and spot on the east side of the Verrazano ??
I was thinking either on northside or southside in one of the small parking lots right off the Belt ?
Was just curious if anyone has spotted from either of those locations before ?

Someone will be getting a rude awakening.
Welcome USS New York, see you Saturday.

 I forgot it was at 8AM. GUARANTEE despite all the announcements 911 will be swamped with calls.

I have shot the Parade of Ships from the east side so I hope this helps. On the east side you have a few choices, depending on the shots you want to get.
First there is the parking lot just south of the bridge along the Belt Pkwy (btwn the bridge and Best Buy/Toys R US) You can park there and get the ship in the harbor area. However when it passes under the Verazzano you would only get the back of the ship. You might be able to get a side view depending on where you stand. And the sun will be at your back.
North of the Verazzano on the Belt there is one parking lot. It is fairly close to the bridge but you have flexibility because of the blacktop walkway along the river bulkhead. If you go further north of the bridge there is a pedestrian bridge from by 79th Street that crosses over the Belt and puts you about 1/2 mile from the bridge. You park on the side streets and walk over the parkway. Makes for a nice picture with the bridge in the background. Plus the sun should be at your back.
Further up is another pedestrian bridge leading to the walkway/bulkhead by 92nd Street but this is about 1 1/2 miles from the bridge.
I would go north of the bridge it will give you the best of both worlds; The Bridge in the background and also the ship up close.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
The USS New York came through the Narrows early and had passed under the bridge by 7:15AM
-
Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Yes, I saw it arrived early from the live shots I saw of it on TV.
Anyway, I was hoping to get in there this morning to see it,
but with the crappy weather forecast today I decided not to go.
Hopefully I'll be able to get shots of the USS New York later next week
when it leaves to go back to Norfolk.

Spectacular! I left the house at 6am, and the LIE was already backed up the length of Queens into Nassau, and the BQE wasn't any better. I got to Shore Road, as you suggested above, around 7:45, hoping they might be delayed...hope you got some good shots of her.
Anyone know when she is leaving? The schedule shows she will be docked and open to the public through Veterans Day next week. Since I missed the arrival, thought I might try to catch her departing.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
I decided to head into work a little early today to watch this. I brought all my camera stuff and took a bunch of pictures, but I won't be able to process them until tonight.
There was quite a crowd along the waterfront over in Battery Park City. There's a V-22 on the back of the ship. She ended up getting reaching the WTC site around 8:00, a bit later than scheduled.

Missed it too Moose, I got there just in time to see her already well past the bridge at 7:15AM. I tried to get ahead of her at 79th Street and then at 92nd Street but to no avail. I then shot up to Bay Ridge Ave to the pier but the PD had the street closed and I just gave up and went home.
I may venture in tomorrow after rush hour for the tour.
If I go in I wll try and find out when she is leaving.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Fred,
FYI- the public tours of the USS New York don't start until Wed.
Also, according to their website, it's supposed to be heading back to Norfolk sometime next Thurs. (11/12 )

If you get in there for the tour on Tuesday, let us know how you make out, OK ?
Thanks !

USS New York [8 photos]
I was out this morning to catch the USS New York as it came up the Hudson (with its stop at the WTC site). With camera in hand, of course. I took a bunch of pictures but these are the best of the bunch:
Before the New York came by, I took some shots of the fireboats as they sprayed (in addition to FDNY, I saw boats from the Jersey City, Newark, and Perth Amboy fire/marine departments):
http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6205.jpg
http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6229.jpg
Then the USS New York got close enough to shoot:
http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6296.jpg
There's a V-22 Osprey on the back:
http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6314.jpg
http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6349.jpg
And bringing up the rear:

http://photos.pgengler.net/photos/20...d/_MG_6387.jpg
And finally, one for the rotorheads:

The 21-gun salute wasn't with any ship's guns; there were seven sailors? Marines? (not sure) near the back of the ship with (I assume) rifles that did the salute.

Wow that is way sweet. I'm getting woozy!!
And I thought the 21 gun salute were the ships guns until I read otherwise in the paper.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Does anyone know of a good vantage point (even on the Jersey side) to go and shoot her while she's at dock?

She's next to the Intrepid, right? Try Alexander Hamilton Park in Weehawken. I can give you more detailed instructions if you like:

Ah man that's a wicked pic Moose, thanks! I'll check it out on googlemaps.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Great vantage point from my office, except for the recently built (read: empty, useless) apartment building blocking off the whole front of the ship. :x

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
i had a great vantage point too:
taken from the captain's bridge onboard the USS Intrepid:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...New_York_2.jpg
a USMC CH-53E
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...53E_151988.jpg
and V-22A were on display and open to the public to view:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...22A_166743.jpg
i spent a good half hour chatting with the pilots of this V-22. they're both alumni of my first college ERAU Precott. they were telling me that "training flights" were no longer limited to flying around base for a while or making an hour hop for a burger. now they're able to go for blue crab or lobster in maine without problems thanks to the range of the V-22. pretty cool IMO, still don't like too many things about the bird. i'll stick to a regular fling-wing instead of that.
these guys seemed to be a little bored, but keep a keen eye out when boaters passed by:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...dson_River.jpg
noticed this while walking around on the flight deck:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...k_Faintail.jpg
the USS New York wasn't the only ship i visited, since my cousin and her husband were in town visiting we also went next door to the USS Intrepid museum. it was my first time back since the renovation of the pier and ship itself:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...pid_Island.jpg
we also went below decks on the USS Growler:
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...lus_Missle.jpg
the hangar deck was where most of the changes took place, even got to take my cousin "flying." i've always said id never want to ever fly a piston helicopter, but might make an exception for a classic bell 47.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...ia_Bell_47.jpg
G-BOAD looks to be in good shape now that she's sitting on the pier, shame that there is so much plexiglass inside though.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...das/G-BOAD.jpg
took one more from the pier, shame that the barge was there...
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...New_York_1.jpg
one thing i learned is that the ship will not normally deploy with aircraft onboard. if the need arises, a/c will join from either Navy or Marine assets. the hangar looked a small to fit 3 helicopters. 2 V-22s should be able to fit on the deck easily. these is plenty of room below decks for all sorts of wheeled and tracked vehicles, and 2 hovercraft fit perfectly on the flood-able deck.
all in all, it's a wierd-looking ship for the likes of the US Navy, but i guess that's where the future will lead. everyone onboard was accommodating and willing to answer questions. the two captains and staff sergeant from VMM-365 that i spent most of my time with were typical of marine aviators... they work hard and play hard too.

Re: USS New York arrival in NYC 11-2-09
Did anyone else hear the news on WCBS 880 this evening about a special V-22 and Harrier flyover
for the USS New York at around noon time on Saturday for it's Offical Commissioning Ceremony ??
I was just wondering if the planes used for the flyover will be flying into LGA or EWR also ??

Flyovers are scheduled for around noon, up and down the Hudson. Not sure if they'll be stopping at the airport, but it's possible.
