Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Wish I could go this year, but I'll be at boot camp. :( I guess that's one less head to worry about.
Sure had a great time last year, though. Thanks for having us again, Fred. :)

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Sounds like way too much trouble. See you guys at the beach!! (And maybe around FRG on the other day). Now....if you can tell me how I can get up in that old Control Tower for arrivals and departures, on the day I'm not at the beach, I am so there!!!

Well, for starters, it helps to be selected for History Under the Stars. Oh, and don't piss off Fred

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Hey Fred,
I just sent you an email stating I would be interested of attending this event.
In the email I linked my website of my work so far. Since I'm a Big ww2 plane buff, this
would be a great night for me for photography and history.

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009

Well, if you go down during the day, all you need to do is pay for museum admission and you will get to see most of these aircraft up close as they come and go during the air show. You can park in the lot at night, but you probably won't see too much in the dark
These were shot on the museum ramp from areas you can get to with museum admission.

I always go the museum (I could have probably purchased a year pass) but it will be cool to see them at night lit up.

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
I WISH they were lit up....Do you know how tired I am going to be from running with my flashes around the aircraft

Thats stupid, the pictures show them lit up, and I think someone here had night shots of the T-birds lit-up by back ground lights.
Long exposures can capture a great deal of ambient light. Trust me, except for the normal ramp lights, there is no special lighting for this photo shoot. The Thunderbirds (which were parked at the terminal, and not part of this shoot!) do have extra ramp lighting, for security purposes, not for our benefit.
For example, this shot from last year, was the result of a 101 second exposure. That's right, one minute and twenty one seconds...

And if you'll allow a word of advice from this old phart...saying things like "That's stupid..." in reply to someone's post explaining his photos is no way to make friends and get access...

I understand as I was the one who took those pictures

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Fred,
It was a great pleasure to be there last year. And yes, Thanks a million for running around with the flash. I only wish I can try to enlist in the pool this year if it wasn't for the work. I am sure photogs that make it this year will have a blast.
Cheers,
Raj
PS:I remember you running few times on this one alone.

I think you took it wrong I meant thats stupid they they dont light it up for photographers.
P.S. If you did take it in that way I did not mean it in a malicious way.
2nd note: After reading my comment over again I did sound like a jerk, it was a poor choice of words and I did not mean it towards you pics.

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Fred, this is a little off topic but everytime I see your work I wonder "Man, what lens was he using".
Are you still using that Tamron 70-300?
Just another testament to how the photographer takes a great image not the gear.

Fred shoots with a pinhole camera

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
I feel like a silly when I see hardcore photographers taking beautiful shots and I have my little 8.0 MP camera.

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Its not the size, its what you can do with it.
Just look at what Phil can do with a quarter inch killer!

I have a few different Tamron's as I have 2 variants of the 70-300 and I have the 28-75 F2.8 and Kit lens. The 28-75 is SWEET for static ground shots, but I have the Longer lens for the flying stuff and must keep the lens stopped down. No IS
makes shots like these Difficult at best. Zoomed out past 200mm makes the long lens ok at best. The New lens seems to
be better towards 300mm.

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
Great panning with that P-40! Worked out great especially with the bank.
So for all those night shots you use your kit lens or the 28-75 2.8?

Re: HISTORY UNDER THE STARS 2009
I'm VERY excited to see the shots that come out of this year's! I loved everything from the last time around.
Fred, are admissions to the night based on whether people are professional or is it more along the lines of a photo contest, where winners get the access?

The idea of night under the stars is that the AAM give us incredible access to the aircraft out on the ramp. In return they ask that we FLOAT the images with their name on the Internet in return. It looks like we will have too many people to attend. 50% of attendees will be repeat and 50% will have never attended before. People cut will start with people that did not have shots show up in the mainstream from last years event (for people who have done this in the past). No matter if it is only your website, or Jetphotos, or Airliners, or local news, or magazine.... it is better than not having any picture online or in print. Many of you do incredible work, I am trying to keep the partnership going as it is wonderful on both sides and is fun. As of the new attendees, it will be judged on night photography work and previous publications and work....so yes, it is kid of like a photo contest for entry. (and I get to go this year!!! but I am not counting Moose and Myself.... I know, I am BAD!)
IF YOU HAVE HAD A SUBMISSION that was not night photos, you may want to resend Night shots....Please remember the Deadline and you have time to retake if you did not shoot night shots.
No assistants will be allowed this year to keep the photographers to a maximum.
(Phil, if you were thinking of joining us, your web site has pushed this more than any other, I think your a shoe in   ....Everyone else would have to wait for the process.)

I guess Fred got tired of me posting photos here before he does - he was sitting right across from me and didn't even tell me he was processing and uploading that shot!
