Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Paterson miffed over 'SNL' portrayal
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/ny ... 2091.story
Quote:
Gov. David Paterson's office lashed out at an impersonation of him on the final 2008 episode of "Saturday Night Live" that made him into a blind, bumbling, whack job with a drug problem that may (or may not) be classified as "a former one."

I can see why he would be offended. On top of that, it wasn't particularly funny.

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
All of the SNL skits that were done about the Clintons, Palin, McCain, & Bush and not one of them made any complaint  *Sigh*

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Over the top + funny = good
Over the top + not funny = offensive
They just rehashed every blind joke from the past 200 years, which puts it in the not funny/offensive group.

So right Mike, Everyone got a great laugh when it was about a woman who spoke funny and hunted moose but now it's offensive. Maybe the blind jokes were in bad taste but you can't have your cake and eat it. Maybe Caroline has been calling him a lot to try to get in the senate and it's annoying him but he needs to lighten up.

Mike and Nick,
None of the SNL skits pertain to physical disabilities(the Clintons, Palin, McCain, & Bush), did they? So that is a tough analogy.
If SNL decided to poke fun at Palin's child with Down's, then you could make case for Patersons blind jokes. However, both would be offensive.

Well the left seemed to love it when SNL basically tried to portray Palin as a ingorant hick who lives up in Alaska which is also offensive, point is when you enable something like SNL by how popular the video became and how Fey was made into a overnight star (including consideration as person of the year?)when she is basically a B list actress your going to get this sort of pushing the envelope with something like SNL. Was it in bad taste? Sure but you can't pick and choose which is what I think Mike was trying to say.

Mario
Completely different to compare a politican to a child, you should know that, better than anyone  There are limits, you never saw the media make fun of Chelsea Clinton & the media was certainly respectful of the Bush Twins.....
By the way, SNL made fun of McCain & implied that he has alzheimer's.
SNL has made fun of every politician, Democrat or Republican, making fun of Gov. Paterson is no different, hell, SNL did shots at President Gerald Ford for years and made fun of him of his age & supposed clumsiness.
And the SNL attacks on Senator Clinton, they just about called her a bi**h.
Now, Gotham brought up a good point if the skit was funny, that is certainly arguable.....

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
As much as I dislike Paterson, I have to agree that the blind jokes are a bit much for television. Not to mention the voice didn't sound like him and it really was just a horrible, unfunny impersonation.

Honestly, I gave Palin a fair trail and she did a well enough job on her own portraying herself as a somewhat underprepared Alaskan, not an American.

True. Kids are off limits.
But IIRC didnt the Obama camp get flak for the "McCain can't email" ad as inappropriate due to his disabling war injury? If so, then how are the blind jokes appropriate?

I believe you, didn't see it but its just as inappropriate.

A campaign ad from a politician is much different than a skit on a comedy show
Even I laughed at some of the skits that were shown on SNL making fun of McCain, but, that Obama Presidential campaign ad against McCain was just plain rude....
Now, if there was a campaign ad potraying Gov Paterson as a blind bumbling idiot, I would not be singing the same tune...

I thought the skit was pretty funny just as the one about Palin and McCain was.

Little confused, what do you mean that she was not prepared to be VP? That she is not American?

Surely your not comparing a campaign to a comedy skit on TV are you?

Again SNL has become an institution with off color humor and has been enabled big time after the reaction to the Palin skit. You can't change the rules in the middle of the game. We can't pick and choose.

Are you going to tell us with a straight face that you've never heard anyone say that Palin acts as thoguh she has more allegiance to Alaska than the rest of the US? How she would always refer to herself as an Alaskan?
Not that I necessarily agreee with it, but I'd have a tough time believing that this is the first time you're hearing that. Which makes me think that you're looking to start a debate, as per your track record.

**** you Phil, Christ no I never heard that stupidity probably due to the fact it is assinine. Looking to start to a debate? I must keep forgetting that trying to discuss anything is pointless here since if you don't agree with the fraternity you are wrong and just trying to stir ****. Like a wise man once said, posting here is a waste of time.

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
First, you clearly misunderstood my tone. It wasn't a stab, but an honest question and some fun-poking over whether or not you had heard that...you're not dumb and are generally up-to-date on the news, so I would honestly be surprised if you never heard that about Palin. If you are a pessimist, I can see why you'd take it that way, but imagine me saying those words over dinner last week....it would be with a playful smirk as we tossed back a beer. Your attitude, much less your "f-you"....unnecessary and over the top.
You have this e-bipolar disorder where you are cool with everyone in person, but a complete dip online because you're protected by your kevlar Samsung monitor. Everyone here knows you'd never speak to me like that in person. Every single person.
Nick, YOU are the one that disagrees with anything others say to ignite trouble. EVERY time. I know that if I pasted a post of yours from two years ago in a new thread under my name, you'd argue with yourself! If I said Golf, and Maximas were awesome, I'm sure you'd disagree with that, too.
You act as though we have some hidden agenda where some trilateral commission is against select people and have some treehouse with some secret goal with a political agenda and massive circle jerks or something. WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS YOU F-ING MORON!!!!!!! Or at least, I thought that for some deranged reason.
NEW BOOK BY NICK VOLLARO:
"Roswell, JFK Assassination, Bush Creating 9/11, NYCAviation and Other Great American Conspiracies of the last 100 Years!"
If you're going to think that we all have it out for you no matter how much we try to be raise glasses together, then let us know and we'll stop wasting our time. Seriously. I've said this more than once in the past, and you won't actually say anything in response. You ignored what was said in the other thread in regards to this, which shows that you have no interest in the friendship that some of us have offered to you.
If you hate it so much here, then why stick around? Stop fooling us when we hang out. You complain so much, but keep coming. Seriously, why? Pick one. Get over it, act your age, move on, just do something. Your whining is so old and the beer is getting warm.

Wow. 8)
OK, so Phil hit the nail on the head, thereby cleafiying what I stated. I never listened to the media attack on Palin. Just ask my wife, I gave her time to sell herself. One major problem I have always seen is that in all her interviews, she identifies herself as an Alaskan, not an American, to the point that its a sore point IMHO. I never heard McCain self reference himself as an Arizonian, Obama as an Illinioan(sp?), etc, etc. As such, I think she is best suited to run Alaska.
Nick, as to your quote "Christ no I never heard that stupidity probably due to the fact it is assinine," it is surely no more assinine than an argument I heard recently that Obama is not black, but biracial.
Lastly, your response below is sad.

Once again, there is a difference between McCain & Obama, to Palin, Palin was the Governor of Alaska & her work dealt with the well-being of Alaska.
When then Gov. Bush ran for President, he called himself a Texan. When then Gov. Clinton ran for President, he always talked up his Arkansas roots.....
As for interviews, Gov. Palin talked about how she was from Alaska and constantly said that she was an American. Palin also connected as to what Alaska was doing to help the country, I believe her favorite quote was how Alaska was there to help the lower 48 with supplying energy......

Mike, perhaps I'm too young to remember, but I don't recall the overkill talk of roots in those past candidates. And as for interviews, in all the interviews I saw, and believe me, I watched a lot of them, I never heard her consider herself an American.
Now, that might be because she was so busy saying "Alaskan" that maybe once in a while you heard an "American" in her talks. And maybe she did slip in an "American" a few times but no where as much as "Alaskan." What she may have tried to convey and what comes across were entirely different. And I tried to give her a chance.
Mike, it is just something I noticed, however "assinine" it may seem.
Don't you just love it?

Depends on the candidate, President Bill Clinton talked about his roots as his opponents tried to attack him that he was the Governor of a small state (sounds familar) & he responsed in kind that he did the same job as the Gov. from a larger State such as balancing a budget, controlling the national guard, etc.
Bill Clinton always referred to his roots, as he was touting his leadership experience, which was his tenure as a Governor.
Though my memory is fuzzy, President Carter always talked of his roots......
-
Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Mike, I see your point, but I don't recall Clinton ending every couple of sentences with "...that's what it's like being a good Arkansasianianian," or whatever they call themselves.
There's a difference between referring to the work in your state, and speaking as though you're priority lies with your state and not your country. The same way people were concerned about JFK being the first Roman Catholic President, thinking that his allegiance was with the Pope more so than the US.
I like Palin, but I have to admit her mentioned Alaska the way she did...kinda made her feel like she wasn't with ME, now that I think back. It made it tough to identify with her. Not saying she did feel that way, but just what was given off. I can see it.
-
Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Phil
I will do you one better, during the campaign, I was annoyed by:
McCain referring to everybody as his friend
Obama talking about change
Palin talking the lower 48, as if the United States was an extension of Alaska.
-
Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
So then Mike, perhaps we can both agree on one thing here....we both may have fuzzy memories :)
But if Phil saw in Palin, what I did, then it's not unreal. While she may have identified with some women, I feel the overly abundant mentioning of "alaskan" made if very difficult to identify with her as opposed to other candidates.
Actually, Mike, as you said just now, Obama's Change, McCain's My friends were as annoying.
But I think you are actually picking up a bit of what I mean with Palin when she refers to the states as the lower 48 (technically its lower 49, isnt it)....in that she unnecessarily distanced herself and that is just another way she did it.
If she takes the right steps now, I think she'll be a viable future candidate.

Well it would be the lower 48 & the one to the side!

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Actually, Airman, doesn't Alaska sit almost due north of Hawaii on a map? I may be wrong.
Hate to be a stickler for accuracy here, but it may be the lower one and the lower right 48!

Agreed, although the 'change' one isn't so bad, as that was his campaign's slogan. "Friend", "Alaska" and such are just annoying.

Re: Ahhh! Governor Paterson has no sense of humor
Off topic somewhat, even though I voted for Obama it seems the GOP'ers have a much better sense of humor than Dems.
