AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
The Flagship Detroit Foundation's Beautiful ex AA DC-3 is returning to NYC next week to make AA Station visits at JFK, LGA, and EWR.
http://www.flagshipdetroit.org/FSD/Flag ... _DC-3.html
Bascally this will be a repeat of last year and unfortunately the DC-3 will only be accessible to airport employees, and possibly departing passengers in the AA Concourses at JFK and EWR as last year it parked on AA gates their whereas at LGA it inside the AA Hangar. At all 3 airports a brief sightseeing flight will be offered (for AA employees) which means the 3 will make 2 landings and takeoff's from all 3 airports. I don't have a detailed schedule but will post what I know/
Mon Oct 13th; Ferry in to JFK, I assume late afternoon arrival.
Tues Oct 14th; JFK station visit. Will make sightseeing flight mid day and will ferry to LGA late afternoon.
Wed Oct 15th: LGA station visit. Will make sightseeing flight mid day and will ferry to EWR late afternoon.
Thur Oct 16th EWR station visit. Will make sightseeing flight mid day and ferry out. Here is a little more info.
http://www.flagshipdetroit.org/FSD/Airshows.html
For those of you not familar with classic bird here are two of my short video's from last years visit.
http://www.airshowbuzz.com/videos/view.php?v=0d709464
http://www.airshowbuzz.com/videos/view.php?v=014b9f61
And finally a word about membership.
http://www.flagshipdetroit.org/FSD/Join_Us.html
The lowest price membership fee of $100 includes flying on any ferry or re-positioning flights. Anotherwords current members should be allowed on the flights from JFK-LGA and LGA-EWR. Sure is tempting isn't it ?
AA777 (who has flown on this bird) feel free to make any additions or corrections to my information.
Regards

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
I have some additional info on the DC-3 visit. As I type this she is enroute to JFK. Like like last time the DC-3 is trackable on Flightaware, it's the reg without the C, anotherwords N17334.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N17334
She will be parked at JFK at AA Gate 16, but will be accessible only to airline/airport employees. I had originally posted that I thought departing AA passengers might have access to the aircraft, I learned today that is not the case nor will it be at EWR. The DC-3 will remain at JFK until approx 1500 Tuesday Oct 14th when it will fly an approx 60 min r/t sightseeing flight. Plans are to depart JFK to ferry to LGA between 1630-1730. At LGA the aircraft will go immediatly inside one of AA's hangars.
On Wednesday Oct 15th she is schedled to depart LGA around 1500 for an approx 1 hour sightseeing flight, then will probably depart for the ferry to EWR around 1630-1730.
On Thursday Oct 16th same schedule for EWR as the past two days at JFK/LGA.
I hope to see some nice shots of this classic airliner on her second NYC visit since restoration.
Cheers

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
looks like she landed on the 31s, i remember flying a freightdog trip in the 3 back in 94,it was about 10 pm,when we arrived via the Canarsie approach, and i wondered what the neighbors beneath me thought about the gentle rumble, rumble overhead,as we descended over South Ozone Park,13L bound, probably didn't even give it a second thought, though one guy jumped in his truck, and drove to the airport when he saw us come over,to check out our tall ship,ok enough,i will stop now.

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
Well the DC-3 made quite an arrival on 22 at LGA around 1745. First a Sprit A-319 was overtaking him on final so the 319 was vectored for an approach on Runway 13. As the DC-3 was on short final for 22 over the ILS the A-319 was now on short final for 13 over the 13 ILS. After about 15 seconds of rapid heartbeat (mine) the 319 was given a last min go-around clearance, it was actually a little close. But there's more, now a DL/Shuttle America E-170 was on final for 22 behind the DC-3 and as the DC-3 did not clear 22 in time the E-170 had to go around. So two go-arounds for one DC-3 arrival, I guess the LGA controllers are not used to slow piston traffic.
Cheers

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
Heres a few (CRAPPY) shots for the 22 LGA arrival. Of course as always the sun came out just after it flew past me. I was now i my shooting position so my angle was too high.
I saw the NKS A319 just above the DC-3 what an amazing site it was. I tried to get the A319 and the DC-3 in the same shot but theyw er too far appart to get int he same shot with the 100-400 Lense. It looked like the A319 was landing on the DC-3. Somehow I found a place test of course so it wouldn't be backlit.

Oh good, so it wasn't our flight we delayed. We actually thought we hear one of our own get spun. Man, what a flight, way too short. Senga, where were you set up? I was in the cockpit for the arrival and took several shots of the approach. I'll have to check to see if we have pictures of you taking pictures of us. :D Oh yeah, and Ron you are in trouble. I had a visitor while I was still there and she says you didn't let anyone know we were coming in tonight. OK, now to finish my work I abandoned for the flight and go home.

Smartass Flyboy,
I was about .5 miles from the whitestone bridge in some industrial park I found. Sure let me know if you have pix of the final approach. I was bascially where you got cleared to land. If you have a shot with the intersection of I-278 and I-678 you might see me in that shot. The Overpass for 678 might have been to high as I was south of it and might be blocked by the road.

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
Quick update from LGA. The DC-3 is back in LGA OTS in one of AA's Hangars. It's about an 8 hour plus fix and they have the part. I will be at work at 0700 Thursday morning and will make an update as soon as I speak with my contact at AA LGA. Good chance it will be in EWR tommorow.
The 3 made a short sightseeing flight this afternoon from LGA doing an intersection takeoff on 4 and also landed on 4. LGA was in the depart 4 land 31 (exp vis) config.
For the second year in a row AA 767 Check Airman Les Abend was in the left seat and it was nice to get to visit with him again today, super nice guy. For those who do not reconize the name many of you probably read his columm "Jumpseat" in Flying magazine.
Got some nice video today, the weather was simply awesome, of the DC-3 and lots of other traffic including the arrival of the NOA Obama 757, my first sighting. It is currently parked at LGA where the last several kids day aircraft parking was.
A big AA thankyou to Chuck Eason from AA's LGA tower and our own AA777 for their help and hospitality, Thanks guys.

Re: AA DC-3 Flagship Detroit Visiting JFK/LGA/EWR Again
As of 0830AM on Thursday Oct 16th the DC-3 is still out of service at LGA. They have the replacement part they need but still lack two special tools to remove the old and install the new. At least it is at a AA MTC base. EWR by late today is not impossible but unlikely, will update later in the day.
