Just got word that a friend of a friend will be flying in the PBY-6 from upstate to FRG tomorrow. Arrival window is between noon- 2pm. Don't think I can cut out of work but I'm sure Rob and Moose can get some shots. :D

thanks! I had heard about this and not known what type of plane this was.
Here is a pic of it. Might try to catch it :)
I don't have much scheduled, so I may have to head on over...
It's flying it into FRG from Elmira, and from what I hear it will be there for good as part of AAM?
That's true - AAM has purchased the PBY and it will become part of their display, offering rides as with the C-47. Talking to some of the guys there, it sounds like they have a fair amount of work to do on her, and it will take some major shuffling to fit her into the hangar.Quote:

They've been talking about this for sometime now, nice to see it finally taking place. Not sure if you know but within five years they need to move because of the new FAA laws, the building needs to be a certain distance from an active runway. From what they told me the new facility is going to be built where the old water pump site was at a cost of 2 million dollars.
The hangar is all cleared out and ready....Quote:

Got to love the size huh?
If its from the Museum in Elmira, I am assuming this is the one:

This is an awesome acquistion by AAM/Farmingdale once again.
I realize catalinas are still "here and there" in dwindling numbers, but seeing one fly anyplace in our area is really rare nowadays.
Wish I could make it out there tomorrow... hope you guys nail it good..
Tom
ooo unfortunately i get out of work @ 3 but after that i might still head over!! :D
So anyone see it? Is it there?
Havent see it or looked for it, but when its here, it'll be here a while :)
She's Here!
Thanks to Fred knowing everyone, I was able to get up into the old control tower for her arrival.
While we were waiting and searching the skies, this O-2 came in - it's a new addition to the Airpower Museum:

Fred explaining to Airport Security that he's supposed to be out taking pictures :!:

Actually, Fred, along with a Newsday photographer and the museum's photographer, got a ride out to the side of the runway for the landing. With Rwy 32 being active, that turned out to be a better spot than the tower.
Here she comes, for an overhead pass before entering the pattern:

The Airpower Museum has been working for close to two years to bring this Catalina to Long Island - it was a very exciting day for all involved. She will now undergo a complete overhaul by the folks at the museum, which is expected to take about a year. Once she is ready, she will join the other operating aircraft flying out of the museum.
I really need to thank Gary Lewi and the staff of the Airpower Museum for the access they allowed me, and a huge THANK YOU to our very own Fred Miller, for helping me get these pictures :!:
I'm very happy for the museum. Great addition. :)
FANTASTIC COVERAGE GUYS!
Moose, Fred- OUTSTANDING WORK !!!!!
Great job and thanks for sharing with us.
Tom
I concur! I am going to try and get out there tomorrow to see it for a little. See I told you Fred and Moose would be there. :D
It's 10:40pm, and the first night shot has not posted by Fred yet?!
Wait, what am I saying, Fred doesnt shoot til after midnight. ;)
Will look for it tomorrow morning.
He was there shooting with me today, but he's working 3 to Midnight. Look for some shots from him later tonight. They put the Cat in the hangar this afternoon - they cleared out the south end, and when I went by after work, it was already inside - no night ramp shots :cry:Quote:

Now I have to go to work..... I wish I could call out dead or something!
BTW, I mentioned this a few weeks ago, if you are ever in Elmira, check our that museum.
We went a few years ago during the NY Wine Fest in July(held ever July at Watkins Glen Race track)...
you get to drive in a Nascar pace car, you have that National Warplane Museum and you get to sample wines from over 100 finger lakes region vineyards.
Anyway, I liked that museum :)
They have an interesting, and large, collection in Elmira. I agree with you Mario, its a nice museum.
Unfortunately, I believe they've fallen on very hard times financially. This is why (I have been told) their B-17 was sold, and I would guess probably the Cat now too.....
