I've been working on the railroad...

I'm out in NE PA for the NASCAR weekend, but since the racing action doesn't start until Friday, today I took a ride over to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton. They have a collection of steam locomotives and other old rail cars, both inside the museum and out in the yard. The site encompasses part of the old Scranton round house, which has been restored. They also have a couple of steam locomotives that they run. I've been there before, but it's been a while, thought I'd share a few shots:

This is a snowplow car, it works like a big snow blower. It was used by the Long Island Rail Road from 1898 to 1967. These were used frequently in the Great Plains and the mountain states, the LIRR was one of only seven railroads east of the Mississippi to use one:

This locomotive was used by the Canadian National Railroad until the late '50s. It was being used today to pull two passenger cars on short rides during the day (yes, I went for a train ride!)

Nice shots John! Gotta get yourself to Strassburg (sp?) one day, they have the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum there. Lots of heavy iron.

Moose, thanks for posting that, the last time I was at Steamtown was in 1977 when it was still in Vermont. Many on this site may not know that when I was much, much younger I was a HUGE steam locomotive enthusiast. Among other things I worked on the Orange Belt Railroad, a short lived (about 3 years) steam tourist Railroad in Central Florida (late 70s). In 1981 Chessie 614 did a month long tour of Florida and I was deeply involved with the Publicity for that event as well as working on all the trips. And for the last two of my four years working at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida I was a fully licensed Engineer on the Steam Railroad their. By far my favorite non-aviation job !

Cool snowplow but you have to admit that the LIRR plo, JAWS, out in Greenport, is impressive looking too!

we should get our rial stuff together at some point. I love the diesels.

I was never a big fan of steam locomotives; I prefer most electric locomotives to most diesels, and most diesels to most steam locomotives. Most of the photos I have of trains (one of my other interests) are either Amtrak/New Jersey Transit, or some of the freight trains that roll through NJ.

I do want to get out to Strasburg Railroad Museum; from what I've heard, it's better than Steamtown.

I got into aviation because of my interest in the NYC subway. I met Clark through that interest and he introduced me to Anet.

I am all about the diesels. The LIRR diesel era was tops ;)

Phil, werent you a strap hanger? strapped and hung....interesting nickname for subway lovers ;)


actually for hte steamers here, anyone into the Loco#39 project, for the LIRR?

There's railpictures.net, which is basically the equivalent of JP for trains. I've got a couple of pictures up on railpictures here.

I've had the 300D almost a year now, and I'm still learning what it likes. That's one of the reasons I like shooting a wide variety of subjects...it keeps things interesting and I get to try different techniques that may be helpful in other situations.

You know, I dont think I mentioned this, but I worked for hte Long Island Rail Road for 4 years.

I have a ton of prints that I want to upload. I havent uploaded them simply b/c I do not know how to do so without losing resolution.

Mike has seen them. I got some great access, lots of diesel rides out t oMontauk, Port Jeff and Oysterbay with Diesel Dan and Wally


so if someone helps me in regard to uploading prints, I have a bunch to share.
