Did you know that on January 18, 1911, a civilian pilot named Eugene Ely became the first person to ever land an aircraft on board a ship, flying a Curtiss pusher onto a makeshift wooden platform constructed on the armored cruiser Pennsylvania in San Fransisco? Then, on May 8, 1911, Pre-World War I, Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, United States Navy, officer in charge of aviation, prepared contract specifications for the U.S. Navy's first aircraft to be purchased from aviator and inventor Glenn H. Curtiss, making this day the official birthday of U.S. Naval Aviation. Now, 100 years later, Naval Aviation has scored an impressive list of achievements in both peace and war and the Centennial of Naval Aviation, kicked off this past January, includes a year-long celebration of events and commemorations including airshows, art exhibits, flyovers and tactical demonstrations. The Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach is proud to be included as one of the U.S. Navy's official 2011 Centennial Events, one of only a few East Coast air show stops for the Centennial Flight!
