Sorry to hear the hunt for the 707 didn't pay off Senga. I know you work hard to catch the rare planes (well worth it IMO) and your efforts usually pay off. It's possible that it went to another airport first for whatever reason and could show up at JFK later, hopefully.
Did the Algerian Air Force A340-500 ever show up and was shootable? I thought that could be new for you guys
Was told the Ruskie IL-76 was originally in last Friday after dark so didn't even get to see it, maybe next year...
-Mario
Let me tell you, the Ii-76 was perfect. She took off and stayed straight and low, almost as if by request, and banked nice and late. It was very cool. Nice to hear the rumble of Russian technology!
Wow. Amazing collection there, Eric.
Did Air Force One take off from a different runway?
It arrived, as "SAM 29000", on 22R, departed on 13L as "Air Force 1".Quote:

Mario,
No only the A330 showed up along with the Gulfstream for Algeria.
Both went to SWF.
As you know I already have this very frame in 2 other operators colors so it would have been a minor catch. I didn't go to DC when it was there as already have the frames 2 times woudl have had a minimal pay off after driving that far.

The first time I shot it was before it was re-engined as P4-TBN. Later it flew for Togo as 5V-TGE and now for Mali as the TZ-TAC.

Great spending the day with Eric, Mario and Sebastian, and what a terrific bunch of planes we saw! Here are some of my highlights:

First time I've seen an IL-76 in person! Like Mario said, a "picture perfect" HoBe departure.

If you look, you can still see the remnants of the old "CCCP" markings on the port wing and tail.

At 1409, 3 choppers suddenly flew over my head yesterday. One chopper had tandem rotors like a Chinook. They flew low but sadly I had no camera. I was at Battery Park by the promenade. The 3 choppers quickly headed west towards JFK. Then at 1413, another 2 choppers passed overhead. These headed-out over the East River then turned north towards LGA. I am pretty sure that 1 of the choppers was Marine One while the others were decoys. I wonder what the other choppers were hauling.
Great shots. I saw Marine One overhead yesterday but I had no camera. It was at 1409 over Battery Park. I figure 1 of the choppers was Marine One.
Those are the most Beautiful shots of AF1 I've ever seen! The blue on the plane looks even better next to the dark blue water, wow. Instead of the official fly-by photo which cost thousands and scared the crap out of everyone who has no clue about airplanes, they could've just used Moose's air-to-air banking photo!
NY-Mario, I'm pretty sure the IL-76 is normally banned at US civilian airports because it's not stage III compliant, except for special government, UN, disaster relief flights, and such (the ones being re-engined with PS-90s are ok).
There should be -STRICT- noise regulations for cars blasting crappy loud music on the streets, not aircraft. Aircraft have always made noise and smoked. Back in the 70s people were just happy they could fly on jets, someone please remind Nimbys and GreenPiss.
Senga, the colors on the Togo govt. you shot is way more interesting, and looks almost civilian instead of corporate. The current paintscheme on that 707 makes it look like stupid BBJ or Airbii corporate jet, and you know how much I hate them  :D

I like the plane shot but LOVE the UH-72 Lakota parked next to it. Does anyone know if that is a visitor or regular to SWF?

Tom: good catch. Where was the photos taken? Doesn't look like JFK, SWF?
Sweet shots, especially the Gambian 727! NY airports might not be the easiest places to shoot at, but there are some good angles even when the action is kind of far. My local airports in Florida are "easy" but then you always get pretty much the same angles from the official photos spots and the traffic is blah. I miss NY
Fligthtaware was showing Turkmenistan and Kuwait leaving, I guess this is the end of UN week.
Well, I know when to take vacation next year! Mario, Wendy, and Theresa it was nice meeting you all. I hope I didn't offend you guys with my "creative" thoughts lol. Next time you guys come up, let me know! Missing the IL76 hurt for sure but aside from the 707, I would have had a major woody seeing the QR C17 in QR c/s.
Tom, that is a WICKED shot of the 727 my friend!
Anyone remember this chick? lol

Way to go Tom! Love that 727.
There are definitely some great photos in this thread. This UN Week will most likely be my last for the next few years, unless I end up in college in DC, and it was one I will not soon forget. SWF was packed this year with aircraft, 28 in total throughout the week. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate during the day on Wednesday but I spent the evening shooting and I was very happy with my results:

Went to EWR to shoot the latest and greatest of lame VIP aircraft for 2009 UNGA. Conviasa flying for Venezuela. Pretty aircraft not not what one would hope for during VIP Week as its isn't Chavez's Presidential A319 or the B732 that used to come.

That was Chavez security detail. Real nice crew, spoke to them for a moment today. Had some issues with the a/c, thats why they were still here today.
Did you happen to catch the C130? I believe it was from the Minnesota National Guard.

Probably the Fire-Rescue/Ops guys that drive around the field on a regular basis.
Great shots Gordon! Good to see some UN stuff at night.
You can't stop next year, we need to know whats happening at Stewart... :D
Senga - love the Conviasa actually. Another keeper - wish I had that one. Granted they aren't heavies, but I think the Conviasa and the (T')Chad MD-87 were the cream of the crop in terms of rarity.
JZ, yes, "The" Gambia (I love that wording on the titles), was at JFK, from the Parking Garage.
Kenny - glad you got N88ZuluLima! To this day, don't think there's anything better in spotting than seeing a 707 300 series on approach.
Mario - Hope to see you in MIA some time; glad you made it to NYC this year.
Mike - Time for a slide show one of these days???
Tom >>> Very glad UN week is over...
Amen! After 8 days of spotting, plus Kids Day today, I'm ready to shoot something other than airplanes for a while. Of course, I'm going to be shooting at the Airpower Museum Sunday (and next Saturday as well).Quote:

As to the Turkish 319 at FRG - I've seen it there for at least 4 years now, and I've never seen any security around it - it's usually just buttoned up at the end of the Sheltair ramp. You may have seen Airport Ops driving by.
diegodangers,
I noticed they had more problems with that plane today. They had some problem with the they aircraft communications today and had problems trying to read back the clearance. And then the controllers complained about them not hearing transmissions directed at the pilot. I guess they never fixed this particular problem. Someone flew in a helicopter right next to the CRJ7 and then loaded up and left. I did shoot some Venezuelan Falconjets at JFK a few days ago. I wonder is he was on those.
Glad you feel that way Tom,
I suppose the Conviasa is a good one to get being that they don't even service the US.
You got that right...I am glad UNGA is over too this year. What a complete waste.
Now back to business.

diegodangers,
Yes I saw the C-130 there but didn't shoot it.

Despite not having any Canon body :( , I am glad I decided to come for the day. It was a great day and Gman and I had fun playing the VIP traffic roulette! (thanks Gman for the loan) It was good indeed to see everyone. Heres my contribution.

Since I've never posted pictures of mine in a public site before I will take the opportunity to spam this thread with some of them, but first I have to say it was great being there to catch special UN and regular JFK traffic such as Olympic Airways -RIP- and meeting so many fellow photographers. (A especial thanks to Moose and Bill for the ride to the photo locations)
Kenny: some of your 'creative thoughts' were hilarious. You should make a tape of your various thoughts for when the traffic is slow 8) Glad you were able to bag a 707... and the girl giving you a peace sign with dad smiling :borat:
Tom: I hope to see you at the Miami geek fest too. I'd love to see some of your NY slides from back in the day!
Senga: you did get some new things dude cheer up, it will be ok... Look, that Conviasa CRJ is the only little plane I would've loved to get, in airline livery (just like I like 'em!) Seems like they modified the livery on that aircraft, so you got a hot new plane, yeah!
I normally shoot slides, but decided to snap away with a digital also, mainly for shots further away. Here's a few digital shots I've edited that both Wendy and I took, including a few non-UN stuff as well:

Mario, if I may say so, you and Wendy went home with quite a collection! It was great meeting and hanging with the both of you for a few days. I hope we all get to do it again soon.
IL-96 RA-96018 was back at JFK today, this was a nice surprise. I also saw an EK 777LR A6-EWE, this is a change from the normal 777W.
Greg
Does anyone have the reg for this bird please? I saw it Wednesday evening overflying FRG getting ready for finals to JFK.. This is one reg I would love to have tied up!Quote:

Not sure if it's the same one - there was more than one IL-62, but some of them were Russian, not Ukrainian - but I caught UR-86528 arriving on Monday afternoon.Quote:

Usually, the one (maybe the only one) of the two Ukraine Air Enterprise IL-62s that's showed up at JFK during the last few UN sessions (looking at SengaB's annual log)
When I saw that one I almost did the Macarena. I don't expect the president of Ukraine to be showing up in a 28-year old IL-62 for much longer.
