1. When you are taking a picture at night and it has any lights showing, you will need to overexpose the shot, the camera can not meter at night while looking into a light and will almost always underexpose (execptions only due to massive lighting where it' is not really a night shot)
2. Never use your LCD at night to "TELL YOU" if you got the shot, your eyes are completly f'in usless as you are looking into a bright picture with fully dialated eyes. I screwed up so many pictures early in night shots becuause it looked good. I still from time to time really muff it up!
If that shot were lighter, I could see that sky about 2 stops brighter...
Ahhhh....wait, Let me photoshop yours really quick so you can see it pop.....

Ahhhhh, Some may like, some may hate, but it is all personal preference.
I love the train shots and would be CRAZY in HDR's, The PAA DC-8 shot at the Cradle...soo jealous! Looking forward to seeing what you take next! BTW, what building was that?

Wow, I love the detail in the white lights..... WELL DONE! The HDR and non hdr look the same, under detail, the HDR has lots more info... Where the hell is that?

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Looks like SFO along the Bay looking towards SFO Intl

Yep, right next to bike path near the Marriot.

Generally, I like my night shots to be more on the dark side. But there are many that I think are very underexposed, leaving interesting details hidden. Thanks for the advice, I still have plenty of experimentation to conduct in the future!

Don't worry, HDRs of the trains are coming. The last few trips have been merely scouting missions, but now that I know what shots I want (and which trains don't contain hobos), I can zero in and eliminate my targets. The DC-8 was in the main museum gallery, right behind the F-9 Couger.

Taken at John Boyd Thatcher State Park last weekend (10/14/07)

Probably one of the best daytime HDR's I've taken so far.

Yea, I just saw the gallery on your site.... You oversaturated everything and it is OUTSTANDING. I love the feel of the shots! :borat: Great Stuff!

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Here is a shot of the Verrazano Bridge, taken from the fishing pier at South Beach.
It didn't realy come out the way I wanted it to.
I focused on the bridge with autofocus but it doesn't seem to be in focus.
Does long exposures effect sharpness/focus?

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Holy. ****. I love the tree shots.
My camera has an auto-bracketing mode. I'm going to take it to Central Park tomorrow morning if I can drag myself out of bed early enough...

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Bigma, that 2nd bridge shot is top notch!
Did you not have the first on a tripod, or was it very windy? Either one could have affected the alignment of the photos.
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
It was windy but it was on a cheap-o tripod.
So maybe the wind was the problem.

From the three throttles, gotta be a Falcon, I'll guess it's a Falcon 900 of some flavor.
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
I took these pics, used the "Merge to HDR..." feature in PS, and I was like, why is this so special? Then I converted to 8-bit color, and I was like, this is fun!
The building to the right of the tree was horrifically overexposed in my original...

This one was all over the place...there are 8 originals, and I think I bumped my tripod at some point because some of the trees are misaligned.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Man, this is fun...
The lower Manhattan skyline, viewed from the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2340/...2dcc4150_o.jpg
(there are 9 more coming, but it's late and I'm too tired to edit)
Anyone know how to do noise reduction on RAW pictures? The JPEGs are nice and crisp, but the RAW images are the noisiest pictures I've ever taken, far beyond the help of Photoshop's noise reduction filter... (Yes, I know that's what I get for not buying a DSLR...)

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Ok, none came out as good as that first one I edited, but a few more were worth showing:
A night version of that red tree I got the other day:

Heights Cafe on Montague St in Brooklyn Heights:

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Here is why I love HDR (thanks Fred for getting me hooked!)
This is a 6-shot exposure, the only light source, other than the internal light, is the Christmas Tree this is under.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
In keeping with the Holiday theme...the tree in my computer room.
This is a 7ft. non-real tree. HDR 4 images @ 12mm, background intentionally blurred in PP.

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Continuing on the Christmas tree theme, this is my girlfriend's roommates' tree...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2119/...15257e3f_o.jpg
HDR is so much easier with a good camera...

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Inspired by Eric, an HDR panorama:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2189/...8de2f36e_b.jpg
45 shots...9 panels, each of which is a 5-shot HDR.
It got cloudy while I was taking the shot...you can tell which panel I did before the clouds rolled in :) I'll try it again when the weather gets better and I'm not so busy...

Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Great stuff Adam. Do you use autostitch for the panoramic merge?
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Yeah, I used Photoshop's Photomerge. It took about 20 minutes :)
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Adam, that is some nice work there! Where was that shot taken from?

Thanks!
I took it from one of the piers near the Exchange Place PATH station...it's a good spot for a pano of lower Manhattan, but I'm looking for a spot further up the river.

I've heard about shooting from Hoboken for a while, and today I stopped on the way home from PA to check it out.

I was shooting from Frank Sinatra Drive. It's right on the river, parking wasn't bad, and it's a great view. It's directly across from the mid-teens in Manhattan. They have a fishing pier out into the river that gives you a view from the George Washington Bridge all the way down to the VZ Bridge.
-
Re: HDR, anyone else play?
Thanks Moose, that's about the spot I was looking for...and it's not too far from the PATH station...after Passover, I'll try to get out there and work some HDR magic... :)
What's the focal length on the first shot?
